Hi all,

I used to be an avid pothead for years, did a whole bunch of LSD, MDMA, a couple of times with shrooms, Salvia (never again lol), Changa, and then more recently 2C-B.

I've slowed down a lot and haven't done any traditional psycs in a few years mostly just some MDMA and 2C-B recently.

I found this place after going down a complete rabbit hole of investigating RCs which has piqued my interest recently.

First post I read on here was that Ibogaine trip report from the site admin in 2014, holy shit what a great story.

Keen to read many more crazy stories and might post my craziest story of LSD/MDMA + Lithium the night before - I'm grateful to still be here after that experience!

Lekker Kersfees indeed, sister and her hubby with children came to visit from the Netherlands suddenly from Sunday so its big vibes. Hope your X-mas was lekker as well!

Am also a GP resident, very cool to see some saffers active on here, hope I can find some RC connections around these parts! Awe my bru!

I only recently found out that ludes where called mandrax here, I'm not a big downer person so I've never really seen em around

Historically, the prevalence of methaqualone (locally called 'mandrax' and 'buttons') has been highest in the Western Cape. Current data from the South African Epidemiological Network on Drug Use (SACENDU), which collects data from treatment centres, highlights a geographic spread across several provinces. More recently, a study determining population size estimates of people who use drugs (targeting specific drugs), identified methaqualone use in 7 South African cities (unpublished data). The study also identified patterns of geographic differences in the available presses, such as 'BOSS' and 'stars'. See Fig.1 below for a image of different presses.

Very interesting, makes a lot of sense that I'm unbeknownst to the fact for so long because it is prevalent in the Western Cape. I also found it quite interesting after being interested in 4-MMC that it was sold here a lot in the rave scenes as 'Cat'. I've never used it because I'm hesitant to anything insuffilated but quite funny that I'm now in the know and it has always been around me.

How long ago was this? Currently, in most cases when people who sell drugs in South Africa, offer 'Cat' they are referring to methcathinone. Unpublished data on the analysis of 20 samples sold as 'cat' confirmed the presence of methcathinone in all samples. These samples were collected during 2019 from three provinces. The samples were analysed using colorimetric tests and two different thin-layer chromotography solvent systems. However, it’s Important to note that the methods used aren't capable of quantifying how much methcathinone was present.

However, Archer et al. (2017) did an analyses of surface water samples from wastewater treatment works (WWTW) in Gauteng using LC-MS. Their LC-MS analyses were done using a targeted approach and the mephedrone peak detections were thus compared with a reference standard, so there is little chance that the mephedrone signal was mistaken for another organic compound. Similarly, Archer et al. (2021) found mephedrone in surface water samples from WWTW in the Western Cape.

So it's possible that some 'cat' samples are not primarily methcathinone, but contain mephedrone. However, chemical analysis of samples of 'cat' using the above screening techniques aren't capable of compound quantification. Best practice would to accompany screening using colorimetric tests and TLC, with quantification methods, such as FT-IR and GC-MS.

Still lots of interesting research to be done!

Very glad to hear that you lived to tell the tale and be with us today. Lithium is extremely unsafe in combination with psychedelics and most other drugs, and unfortunately this life-saving information does not appear to be too widely known. I’m interested in hearing your experience (when you’re ready to share it.)

Lithium is extremely unsafe in combination with psychedelics and most other drugs, and unfortunately this life-saving information does not appear to be too widely known. Yeah we found that out after the fact - my one friend stumbled upon it being a deadly combo after trying to figure out what the fuck happened that night. The worst part was the person I had received the Lithium from was on it daily and reacted very badly after taking some LSD and had to be taken to the festival paramedics, we disclosed exactly what he had taken and that he was prescribed Lithium and they did not even know that it was a thing - they were being very dismissal because "ah another one that just took too much drugs" or something.

I have most of the story typed out, but I did so quite drunk so I would probably have to take a re-read and editing before I can finish it up. Will have to draw some inspiration from the wonderful storytelling I've seen here to make it seem a bit more coherent rather than a run on words describing my experience and those around me.
