What up, guys and gals!

I'm new to this site, and the reason I joined is because I'm a writer, and I'm currently writing a story that involves a bunch of individuals that have a track record with alcohol and drugs.

One of the characters is addicted to heroin, but I wanted to describe the process of injecting the heroin in his body, along with the sensation it provides him, and I've never really used it before (just weed and alcohol on my end), so I'd be grateful for any descriptions you guys can provide.

For example, why use a spoon and heat it?

Also, I'm aware that heroin is a depressant, so if one of the other characters needed a hallucinogen drug, what is the most effective one from your experience? (Mushrooms, LSD, or something else entirely.)

Sorry for my inexperience with all this, I'm just a bit OCD in my writing, and would love to give everything the detail and attention it deserves, and I saw this site and how its trying to minimize the damage people do with drugs, so I thought you can help me with this one, as my goals aren't that far off either.

Hi there and welcome to the site

You would be better off asking these questions in one of the regional threads or other drugs sections to be honest. If I could suggest this thread and you will get the information you require in a short time.

Heroin is an opiate though not a depressant and heat is often applied to speed up the process of dissolving the heroin into the liquid. The other reason may be that some of the types of heroin are not for injecting so it is mixed with citric acid to turn it into base and suitable for injection (again I think the heat is to speed up the process).

As for the hallucinogen it would really depend on what he 'needed' it for? LSD and Mushrooms are the common ones but there are dozens to chose from each with a different effect and duration (DMT for example would last you 20 mins in hyperspace - DOM would last you 20 hours in a fantasy world etc). Partying then LSD (or 1pLSD) is a good go to if your experienced and in a good setting.

If your story is to be believable to drug users these small details would make a difference and it may be worth you reading some of the trip reports here

For the hallucinogen, I basically want to write about how one of the characters who abused it started seeing everything all out of whack, and then tried to 'defend' himself from his friends, who he thought were out to kill him even though they were just trying to help him and prevent him from harming himself.

To be honest - stimulants would do that quicker than hallucinogens, with hallucinogens you can usually bounce back fairly quickly unless your doing them hard and to be honest I've never heard it happen with the ones you mention lsd and mushrooms (It just doesn't normally happen). Stimulants on the other hand would make you lose the plot way quicker (within a few days) and the paranoia / mania / psychosis will take over where reality and imaginary will blur. The effect where friends are enemies, shadows are enemies, people on the tv are talking about you, car number plates have hidden messages about you , shadow people waiting for you to fall asleep etc.

8 years of modding this site and there have been a few cases of people really losing it on hallucinogens (in the way you describe) but that was after heavy abuse (not use). Yeah everyone has heard about 'that guy' that took LSD and flipped out - I can assure you that for every one of those stories there are a thousand true ones about stimulants :D
