GRAY’S FAMILY ATTORNEY: WHITES USE DRUGS DISCREETLY
by PAM KEY
3 May 2015

Sunday on “Fox News Sunday,” attorney Billy Murphy, who is representing the family of Freddie Gray, said the war on drugs is a taking African-American fathers away from their families unfairly because he said, “Whites in this town just like in major cities across the country have illegal drugs, use them discreetly and don’t get prosecuted.”

Murphy said, “The problem is a very deep problem. It can’t be satisfied by labels of left and right. These are children who have been neglected. They don’t have parents because mainly the war on drugs is a war on black people suspected of having drugs. Whites in this town just like in major cities across the country have illegal drugs, use them discreetly and don’t get prosecuted. 91%, 9 % of the cases in Baltimore city, probably more, where only blacks and browns are prosecuted for drugs. That has to be addressed. We have to end this terrible war on drugs which has never been successful and only creates over-incarceration of black men who could be fathers and destroys black families in so many ways. You’re right to point out in some ways that money is not the answer. Part of the answer is that we have to create a city where kids get raised properly. That we take care of that and when they are neglected, problem because they’re just kids.”

So if black people would use drugs more discreetly, they wouldn't get prosecuted? But they cant, because daddy is in jail and they therefore never learned "how to use drugs discreetly"?

Of America's population of ~300,000,000, roughly 15% are black.

As a measurement of percentages, 'Street drug' use by all racial groups (whites, blacks, latinos, asians) in the entire nation is about the same (the lone exception may be natives/aboriginals), and so too is what would be defined by experts in neuropsychopharmacology as true addiction, which is the long term habitual usage of any given mind altering substance despite clear and irrefutable evidence that it is of no benefit and high risk to one's mental and/or physical wellbeing.

At present, and going back to before the war on drugs formally began, the average wealth of the same racial groups are not the same at all - not even close as a matter of fact. The average Caucasian family is significantly wealthier compared to the average African-American family, who generally range between the lower spectrum of what is defined as "Middle-Class" to that of "Poor" or "Living in Poverty."

As a result of their increased vulnerability and difference of skin color, a far greater percentage of African-Americans compared to Caucasians are indeed subjected to harassment by the police - such as 'Stop 'n Frisk' - when narcotics law enforcement are searching to fill their daily quota for drug busts. Despite what some people may think, racism continues to run rampant in America, and it thoroughly transcends into law enforcement as well.

Even though they partake in the same amount of 'street drug' use, if not more, Caucasians are far less likely to be caught and handed a criminal record. If this wasn't the case, then America's prison population would reflect that, and it doesn't, and never has.

So are whites privileged over blacks when it comes to using drugs discreetly and still being busted by money hungry cops? Abso-fucking-lutely.

P.S. - Caucasian readers of this post who have done time for possession may feel differently, and I can relate, but it doesn't change the facts.

Bullshit. City cops LOVE busting couty ppl. For one thing they can usually pay the fine, it makes an example out of them...if you are white and drive down to like Ed.o dson and Brice and a cop sees you, better believe you're getting pulled over, and the I'm lost excuse doesn't work lol.

So yeah, they bust tons of coi try ppl, black and shit. Once again this guy is putting a spin on shit. I think k he ran for mayor in the early 90s? Not sure, but he is def a great bullshitter and can really pull the wool over PS eyes.

We (5 white 18 year-olds at the time) got pulled over in a not-so-white neighborhood in Staten Island NY once, and the cop said "You guys are either here to buy or sell drugs, which is it? Oh, neither you say? Step out of the car, please." So, while I do somewhat agree with the message of the article, I don't think it's unanimous.

I don't think ro4eva's point was "no white people ever get harassed by the cops or charged for drug possession", so I'm not sure why you're all posting with your white individual experiences.

The stats are pretty clear that black Americans do not use drugs at any higher rate than white Americans, although patterns of use may be different. Literally the only possible explanation for the disproportionate levels of black incarceration in the US (especially for possession and low level dealing) is racist policing and enforcement. You have to seriously bend into some logical contortions to come up with any other conclusion.

... but don't you see that the cop was profiling the black neighbourhood, not your white bodies?

Exactly. It's a symptom of "what are these white boys doing in this 'drug neighborhood'", a classification that's historically been intimately attached to race

In my high school I was the only white kid to get bagged during my 3 years there, even though my predominantly white school had the highest drug use of all private school in my city. In my neighborhood, I was one of two white kids that got bagged. I personally had dozens of encounters with police between smoking in public, urinating in public, hopping turnstyles, graffiti etc. Only got arrested once, all other times was let go with a ticket for my parents or they had to pick me up from the station without being booked. I wish I could say the same for my black friends. Every single black friend I had growing up aside from 1 (I can remember 9 by name but I know I had more) had been arrested either once, or multiple time, for the above.

Is the difference because of race? I can't say with certainty. What I can say though, is that we all did the same amount of crime and drugs, we all dressed in similar fashion, we came from the same neighborhood. Why did I have such a different experience? I have my suspicions.

I realize anecdotal evidence isn't worth much in debate but I felt I should share my personal experience.

Just wanted to point out that I've also been busted a couple times for possession and had to do time for the most recent bust. And I guess it wouldn't matter much to write about it here if I didn't notice a pattern. What I mean by that is that it's always happened in neighborhoods considered to be poor.

Obviously I've learned my lesson and try to avoid such areas of the city, but since my methadone clinic happens to be smack in the middle of one such area, I don't have much of a choice but to briefly travel there on a regular basis.

Why is that significant? Over the past 5 years, my white ass has been pulled multiple times by cops who literally use the neighborhood's streets as their auxiliary parking lot. And while it's gotten to be really frustrating to see them there every damn week, whenever they do end up with someone in the back seat, 3 times out of 4 it's either a black dude, or some really dark fella from India or Sri Lanka that I mistake as being of African descent. And what's disturbing is that the part of town in question is not predominantly black or colored, but rather Caucasian.

I swear I'm not cherry picking here - it honestly seems like there's a tendency for black folks to be the ones ending up arrested - in that part of town at least. Seems like there's a bias towards them, particularly during evening hours.

Sure, my own experience regarding this topic is anecdotal evidence at best, but clearly I'm not the only one noticing this, am I?

I completely sympathize with any of you - regardless of skin color - who have been deprived of your freedom by way of being thrown in jail and/or prison (amongst people who committed actual crimes such as rapists, murderers and pedophiles) solely because you happened to be caught with something as benign as parts of a fucking plant in your pockets (or powders/pills/etc.).

You did not victimize anyone and you weren't planning on it, yet still you were treated like a felonious criminal who automatically owes society a debt, and for no good, no rational reason whatsoever. And now you have a record which has hamstringed you considerably - again, for no good reason. And it's a disgrace for things to be like this when your nation calls itself "the land of the free." I just think such injustice tends to occur with greater frequency to men and women of color is all, but I suppose I can't prove it with objective evidence.

Perhaps I didn't explain myself well enough. Unfortunately, English is not my first language, so please pardon me if that's the case.
