NEMD Grateful Dead Appreciation Thread

DSO is always fun I see them every time they come within 2.5 hours from me, and this may sound crazy, but I think they are MUCH better with Jeff Mattson on lead guitar, his guitar playing is a lot more fierce than John Kadlecek's. I haven't seen them with Mattson yet, just heard recordings. I tried to catch them in Ithaca, NY last month (w/Jeff) and my tire flew off my car 10 miles outside of Ithaca...and a tow truckin' I went home :(

If you dig Stagger check out versions from 12/16/78 and 6/7/91.

Going to Furthur 2/20 at UMass Amherst. How are they and is anyone else going to that show?

Haha, I am not THE Trey Anastasio, I just love Phish. I saw two DSO shows in NYC about a month ago. They rocked for sure! And the Bob Weir guy looks and sounds exactly like Bob Weir in the 80s... weird.

I love the Grateful Dead! I'm 27 years old, and they truly are the band that made me fall in love with music.....Franklin's tower, Terrapin Station, Wharf Rat,Black Peter,Box of Rain....... I could go on for days

DSO is pretty damn impressive....they play in Atlanta all the time

Ah, my home! I love these guys, and Furthur is great to see now! I caught the NYE show in San Francisco, and had the time of my fucking life.

A little high at the moment, but just wanted to say a few weeks ago I got to shake Tom Constanten's hand and talk to him for a little bit. I was fryin' balls on some L also, and it was an amazing, humbling experience.

Wanted to add, as a deadhead my favorites are always changing but I will share a few. Terrapin Station is my mainstay, after my most intense psychedelic experience during that song live. Althea, Wharf Rat, Caution, Lovelight, Jack Straw, Brokedown Palace I could go on for days. So many roads is a new favorite as well, after New Years.

What, are you guys serious? Furthur is a recycled effort. While Fake Jerry may hit the guitar notes, the X-Factor, which makes this music, is lacking. And yes, it is crazy to say Chimenti is better than Pig, Brent, and Keith. Chimenti is solid, dont get me wrong, but he isnt better than the originals.

Just saying, don't knock furthur until you have seen them play. Wow, they aren't the dead. No one will be the grateful dead again, because jerry is gone. They are the best music I have seen since then though, and that is saying something. They do have that X factor live, maybe not on recordings but there is that "UMPH!" when you see them vibe together. Fake jerry was a member of DSO, but Jeff Kadlecik is in Furthur, and he rages as his own person, while bringing a little bit of jerry to the licks.

I've been loving the other one recently, but especially when they do the entire cryptical with it. "And when the day had ended, with rainbow colors blended, their minds remained unbended..."

Weir is old and grumpy and speaks over the lyrics nowadays, Phil songs too much, Joe Russo is the biggest douche on either side of the Mississippi, and Fake Jerry is still Fake Jerry. Chimenti and Lane are solid as shit tho, just kinda wish they would try their own things a little more. I liked Lane in the Primus stuff he did and Chimenti would be good at anything. Go make a name for yourselves outside of this recycled BS act!!!

And I apologize if I am being offensive, I love the Grateful Dead and their music, but this lineup pisses me off. Funny enough, I thought the PLF lineup with Jackie Greene and Steve Molitz was fucking awesome.

^^Oh my! PLF with Jackie Greene was a joke. Too much country.

How many times have you seen Bob play in the past 5 years or so? He's not grumpy, he's the youngest of all GD members, and he "talks" over the Jerry tunes so as to give it the salute he deems necessary. He surely can't sing like Jerry. He knows that and does a good job. He knows it could be better so now he shaes those parts with John Kadlecik.

His style isn't at all like Jer's and he does it his way.

I've been around, seen ALL the forms of the GD that have existed since 1988, and although I haven't yet seen Furthur, I respectfully disagree. I'll see them in two weeks, then two weeks after that.

I don't know Joe Russo, so I have no idea if he is a douche. On what is that based? His drumming is solid. He's no Billy Kreutzmann, but he's solid and fluid.

Instead of being so pissed off, you should open your mind and check them out. Your mind must not be too closed if you paid to see Phil with Jackie Greene.

And I gotta say. I loved Keith, but Chimenti is obviously a better player than Keith. You aren't listening.

No offense. But, if I get you upset, good. It makes for good debate.

Some songs Chimenti seems to be AWOL (he was the same way in Ratdog, imo) BUT when he does get going he is incredible. Check out any version of Jack Straw or Althea that Further has played and tell me those songs are not a Chimenti showcase.

Fuck all the Bob Weir haters, I want him to be my new daddy. I without question, prefer Bob songs to Jerry's. But mainly for what Jerry does on his guitar. Most guitar players will tell you it's much more difficult to emulate Bobby than Jerry...his timing is just so weird and I fucking love it.

I also get fired up with people who give John K slack or call him fake Jerry. He is far from a typical cover band musician, part of what makes GD music so special is the unlimited possible variations a song can be performed...it's not like he's going out there playing rehearsed licks. I would say he is about as half as enjoyable to listen to than Jerry...which is still pretty impressive...I do love John K but Jeff Mattson to me, is the best Jerry guitarist emulator alive..FIERCE. I don't want to glorify drug usage, but I'm thinking the biggest barrier for John K is the fact he is supposedly sober...hopefully one day he will hop on Jerry's diet ;) To me his sound is a little to 'kiddie'.

I consider my self a pretty jaded person...but the way I see it, if you genuinely enjoy the music that the GD left for us you should try and defend what's currently happening instead of puking in it's face, acting like you are the musician's personal managers or some bullshit. Giving Bobby slack for singing Jerry songs? Seriously? IMO who better to sing than his side by side partner for so many years? If there is ever the day where there isn't a band exclusively playing GD music, I will be sad.

where did i say bobby shouldnt sing jerry songs? If you can quote that, I will give you money. Now, all im saying is, Bobby sucks at singing nowadaze compared to where he was in earlier ratdog daze. As someone who has been into this music for a long time, I can honestly say I dont think Weir's heart is in it anymore. Listen to a Minglewood from the GD days, or even early Ratdog, and then listen to a Minglewood from any post-Kimock Ratdog show. Thats what Im saying.
