NEMD Grateful Dead Appreciation Thread

The part that had me rolling was when he talked about trustfarians and I just thought bago. Id go but I couldnt afford it. I do think Trey is the right choice. Jimmy herring is boring, darkstars carbon copy meh, I could never hear a Warren haynes note again in my life and be content. Phish rarely covered the dead and I feel like he will put a good spin on it with his interpretations. The amount of shows sucks but the GD has some old dudes in it that probably are not wanting to go on a giant tour though maybe a few more dates would of been nice tbh

"it's okay, at least donna isn't supposed to be there......" lmfao

but yeah man. i think trey is the best choice, too. but mostly because who else is out there who's both capable of playing jerry's part and, more importantly, willing to play jerry's part? (besides warren/jimmy/insert_hippie_douche_circuit_hack_here) it takes a really talented, top tier, master-level musician to play jerry's parts well -- and let's face it, not many top tier musicians want to associate themselves with the dead, for a variety of reasons.

i think somebody like pat metheny or another great jazz guitarist would have been the GOAT level choice to play jerry's part, but i doubt he'd touch that gig with a ten foot pole. or hell, even think outside the box a little bit and get branford marsalis to play jerry's part on sax. branford might have actually done it, too.

i think trey will do a fine job, though. and i'm interested to hear his take on the music.

at first i was pretty confused about trey, i was definitely saying let john k play.
but this is a show not to be missed.
ill be out there with my finger up.
hopefully its real loud so i can hear it from the lot. heh.

Yeah they could of picked any number of players thinking outside the box, but I think they wanted to draw as big a crowd as possible so they went with the bigger name. This doc. cracks me up; dont know if you have ever seen it

Whole floor is GA now. I had a dream I got tickets last night. The night before I had a dream that Tennessee beat Kentucky. Both are about as realistic as the other

I don't know, yall are beast as fuck, but you've been involved in a few close calls to some pretty awful SEC teams already.

Our AD has ruined Tennessee sports. They never should've fired him in the first place, but I kinda love our little retard coach now. We typically play yall tough. We'll see.

And suddenly the dead are utterly forgotten and talk of sport breaks out..

I say we hold an emergency session of some blathery and vote on if this threads post count should be increased to 2000 as opposed to the traditional 1000.

I vote Yes.

I've been reading articles about the decision to have Trey play the show with them, and I've come to the conclusion that there could have been so many worse choices. When Trey is playing, you know it's him. I like that he has a district style. I also think it's much better than choosing someone because they sound like Jerry.
I wish they would have done something similar to the Last Waltz or what Leftover Salmon does with the Nashville Sessions. It would have brought the show to so many higher levels bringing in an array of talent like that.

Someone wrote, possibly in the GD appreciation thread that American Beauty was their best studio album. While obviously live is the way to go, I have to say American Beauty pales in comparison to Workingman's Dead. Skeletons From the Closet was my first album, and if I was playing something for someone who'd never heard them I'd play that or American Beauty. That was all in response to the 'High Time' you pointed out. There's a decent Big River too... Something I haven't found yet is a really good live Don't Ease Me In....
And Thank You! Music is my medicine. When it hits, you feel no pain :)

I know I have seen a few good don't ease me in live. I will try and track them down. This might have been one of them.. Pretty good late era show, well except Welnick is playing like a total clown allot of the time and kinda ruining what could have been really sick.. sometimes his playing reminds me of background music from a seventies tv program... He does pretty decent on the don't ease me in.. but really someone should do some sound board work and edit some of that other crap right out IMO.

Grateful Dead 5-30-92 Sam Boyd Silver Bowl Las Vegas NV

I caught a few runs at sam boyd and when you mentioned dont ease vegas popped in my head.. Im having trouble remembering what the hell shows i was at.. Must have been the roses.

EDIT: yeah i was not at that 92 show I don't think

This show has a pretty decent acoustic don't ease
Grateful Dead Live at Fillmore East (Late Show) on 1970-05-15 (May 15, 1970)
"Road Trips: Vol 3, Number 3"

AHHH.. I found the one I was thinking of .. its pretty decent.. I had a blast at these shows.
Grateful Dead Live at Sam Boyd Silver Bowl, U.N.L.V. on 1994-06-24 (June 24, 1994)

As far as the best studio album.. Im not even sure if I have listened to them all. I also officially divorced myself from the whole endless Grateful Dead song/show era ranking discussion and the musical high brow snobbery that so often goes along with it. I just pretend im confused and listen to the music play.

I know I like reckoning, but I guess thats spliced together live tunes.
The Grateful Dead - Reckoning

EDIT: This don't ease does not suck Grateful Dead Live at Alligator Alley Gymnasium, U of Florida on 1980-11-29 (November 29, 1980)

Re: Trey

I mean, aside from the fact that this is definitely a cash grab and he brings a crowd, the dude knows his dead. Phish played tons of dead tunes when they got started and I'd argue that those Phil and friends shows from 99 with Trey and Page are some of the most epic shows ever. Granted, they had Kimock to really fill the Jerry sound, but still, just sick sick shows. I was also at shoreline in 99 when Phil came out and they ripped cold rain and snow and viola. I was also there in 2000 with bobby and that nasty west LA fadeaway. Homeboy can hold down that spot just fine. It will be boss as shit with Trey on guitar. Hornsby is definitely a wild card, and a damn good one, imo. I really hope I get tickets

4) The $ong$ aren't that good to be owed to anyway.

5) Widespread Panic rules.

LOL.. What's with all the hate? What an idiot.

EDIT: The guy who started this seems to be Anthony Blazer, who is attempting to start up Jamtunes.com.

I smell website failure with this thinking and attitude. Looks like he has been trying for quite awhile, by the time he gets that off the ground Jerry will have been reincarnated by the second coming.

=D

Maybe he thinks the songs suck cause WSP plays some of them so awful compared to the Dead and Phish??

lol, there's so many legitimate criticisms that one could level against the dead (inconsistent playing, aimless and highly esoteric noodling, DRUMS (lol)), but this just shows how poor the guy's taste is. the songs were the best part about the dead, maybe the only part that's almost universally agreed upon to be something they did excellently.

i mean they wrote ~100 songs that were great, and at least 50 which rank among some of the best songs ever written by anyone. i mean jfc, listen to american beauty and seriously try to tell me they couldn't write good songs.

that being said that was a pretty lulzy petition

also, here's a nice little gem. contains my favorite rendition of eyes:

11-11-1973
https://archive.org/details/gd1973-11-11.sbd.rolfe-miller.83318.sbeok.flac16

this eyes is just fucking orgasmically good, i've listened to it probably 200 times and i still enjoy it as much as the first time i heard it. i honestly don't think i've ever heard a better rendition tbh. it's a fantastic show all around, too. it's got an awesome china rider, one of the best china dolls, a bangin' sugar mag, hell even a solid weather report suite. i can't speak highly enough about this show.

if you ever get a chance, i recommend picking up the "Winterland 1973: The Complete Recordings" box set, which has this show on it among others. it's worth it if only for the fantastic audio quality, some of the highest quality 4-track live recordings they've ever released.

Rumor mill - more shows to be announced in San fran, nyc and red rocks. I don't think they will be with Trey though
