NEMD Grateful Dead Appreciation Thread

If yall haven't checked out Joe Russo's Almost Dead yet, get on it. (JRAD) the shit is gnarly

Hope everyone is well!

Okay, I just want to say that I appreciate that there is a Grateful Dead appreciation thread. My first ever CD was skeletons from the closet. Unfortunately I am too young to have seen them with Jerry, but I have seen all the other guys numerous times as The Other Ones, and in their various solo gigs. The Grateful Dead has shaped my life and views on the world and literally saved my life while I was in the midst of crushing depression and like a good friend has helped me through hard times and been there through good times. All that being said I am giving my biggest of "Hell Yeah!'s" to this thread.

Dude the memories I have with this poster... A good friend of mine who I used to trip with all the time at his apartment was a big Dead Head. He had this poster on his wall and I used to sit there staring at it and it would turn into the most beautiful things. It was better than watching TV lol.

I have this poster on my wall, looking at it right now :)

Listen you guys if interested in the Dead should go over to the Dozin site. I have my own opinions of the dead and most are not positive. 1st off because they were never a radio friendly band until the late 80's you either liked them or not. Unlike the Monkees, Beach Boys,Rscals, Lovin Spoonful,Doors ect. Now when they were good they were the absolute best at what they did,but when they off they were fucking horrible and you had a good 1 in 8 chance of a lame show and I mean technical difficulties, unwanted feedback, insesent tuning, rediculous banter, and knoodling to finally come around into a song. Again when they segued into one after another seamlessly it took you to places that you've never been before then on the other hand they could so off you'd want to walk out knowing it wasn't going to get any better. I saw them 28x so I do know what the fuck I'm talking about. From Winterland to the roll out of the Wall of Sound and free gigs in the park and venues all over both coasts. Anyone who thinks every show was a winner is an idiot and really has 0 taste in music.

china doll is a really weird and interesting song imo. it was originally called "the suicide song" and according to robert hunter it's told from the perspective of a ghost who has just killed themselves. when i read that the song suddenly made total sense to me

my fave version is the one from the winterland '73 box set, i forget exactly which night it was. iirc some time in november '73

Yeah, now that you bring that to light i totally see it. It even maybe warms as an anti suicide message a bit as well.

These lyrics hit so strong with me.
Take up your china doll
It's only fractured
And a little nervous from the fall

I guess it hits home so hard because we all are so fragile, yet so strong.

<3"Standing On The Moon"<3

Standing on the moon
I got no cobweb on my shoe
Standing on the moon
I'm feeling so alone and blue
I see the Gulf of Mexico
As tiny as a tear
The coast of California
Must be somewhere over here - over here

Standing on the moon
I see the battle rage below
Standing on the moon
I see the soldiers come and go
There's a metal flag beside me
Someone planted long ago
Old Glory standing stiffly
Crimson, white and indigo - indigo

I see all of Southeast Asia
I can see El Salvador
I hear the cries of children
And the other songs of war
It's like a mighty melody
That rings down from the sky
Standing here upon the moon
I watch it all roll by - all roll by

Standing on the moon
With nothing else to do
A lovely view of heaven
But I'd rather be with you

Standing on the moon
I see a shadow on the sun
Standing on the moon
The stars go fading one by one
I hear a cry of victory
And another of defeat
a scrap of age-old lullaby
Down some forgotten street

Standing on the moon
Where talk is cheap and vision true
Standing on the moon
But I would rather be with you
Somewhere in San Francisco
On a back porch in July
Just looking up to heaven
At this crescent in the sky

Standing on the moon
With nothing left to do
A lovely view of heaven
But I'd rather be with you - be with you

Wow 63,000 views.,

Love the Dead though.

Is it true that they smoked DMT and picked the first two words the visusls guided them to in a dictionary?

Theres also the whole choose a man to pay off your debts to move forward in the spirit world myth

Yall following this rumor of soldier field July 3,4 and 5 with the core 4, Hornsby and Trey as fake Jerry. I already booked a room in Chicago just in case

No, wow that would be the shit.

When i pulled up the dead face book I got this, but then when i tried to access the page they said it had been removed.

It is a fact that Trey Anastasio is going to play guitar with the Dead at a three-day, Fourth of July holiday weekend celebration on July 3, 4 and 5 at Soldier Field in

Wonder going down?

I received an email about that the other day, and read about this on facebook. I'll just watch the web casts of the shows. I've seen the grateful dead, ratdog, Phil and friends, the other ones/the dead, and phish more than a few times, and I want to save money to travel to the west coast, and overseas to Europe.

Seeing the dead in '08 with the Allmans was cool but I went mainly to see friends I hadn't seen in awhile, and see the Allman brothers band.
