Yea, the Vince suicide story is rough as fuck.

I, too, prefer Brent, but dig a lot of Vince stuff as well.

he's by far my favorite dead keys player, he was so damn good during 71-74, '76, besides his synth experimentation in '77, he had a few moments in 77-79, but sadly was just nodding most of the time just trying to copy jerry's lead, yet he crushed it in JGB during that era

I think keith kind of sucking in '78 was a good thing, it pissed off jerry and pissed off jerry is awesome jerry, also love weir's work in '78, yes even on the the slide


his story is pretty sad as well, it's pretty crazy there's not a single piece of audio/video footage of him speaking
I know jerry caught keith going through his stash one day and things were never the same, jerry wanted to fucking kill him, while ace was probably fucking his wife on the side

new there was a reason she was allowed to stay in the band.. kidding a bit because she did have some moments.. but then again she certainly wailed outa her ever loving mind moments that just make you laugh and snicker and shake your head.. donna8(.

wondering what you guys think of this statement... I have seen dark star many times over a long period of time.. starting to see them in the very beginning and then a few times a year when they would make the colorado front range for dates... also inevitably ran into them hitting the summer festival circuit.. then life got in the way and I have only been able to see them three or four times in the last five or six years.. but what would you say if I said that I think DS can now put on a show thats better than the dead? I'm not getting into the differences in technology or who actually created the music, etc.. At the last show I was at I just kept thinking this is fuckn sick and it is better than 80% of the dead shows I caught live.. (granted the shows I caught were all in the 90s:\).. so i guess i was just kinda exploring my own thoughts on this... and as I have heard so many people say.. The Grateful Dead was the band playing at the best show I ever saw but were also on that stage for my worst show.

I guess what made me think of this now was the last DSO i saw started out with a dona tune..

the guys in dark star have performed more shows on stage than the actually GD

they are professional musicians and have gotten significantly better over the past 3 years, jeff mattson is a beast, and you can even tell by how the audience responds to the music, so into it, because it's just great musicians playing great songs

but their highs don't touch the highs of the real deal, but I always leave concerts very pleased

I think in order for them to take it to the next level they need to replace rob barracos with jeff chimenti

and btw, everyone who I've talked to who have seen donna play with the GD has said that being there made all the difference, her wailing created quite the explosion of powerful energy
 
'81 altheas are fucking hot, i'm bittersweet for forgetting all my fav versions, i've moved on i guess

can't beat 90s versions for my taste, 10/27/91 is one i'll always remember, edgy as fuck

what i dig most is both guitar players are much more 'weir' than 'garcia'
imagine if the band kept playing after jerry's death and bobby was front man, updating his MIDI sounds and played much faster/frequently

i'll try to compare the songs to GD tunes so you know what you're getting into

black peter/wharf rat/morning dew/little red rooster/althea riffs
(climax is littered with volcanic meteors!!)

excellent harmonies -> monster jam -> excellent harmonies
 
china cat(vocals)/here comes sunshine(harmonies/music during harmonies leading into return of chorus)/terrapin/ crazy fingers
 
I guess after listening to this I think they are amazing musicians.. I like the heavy blues git.. but I sense allot of the same musical monotony that has always turned me off from phish as a band that i could see allot of shows from.. although the vocals are crisp.. for me they lack diversity.. This is only an opinion on the limited exposure I have had.. but i think at least for me it is strange that i had the same vibe off these performances as I had for the live I half assedly caught..


I think my tastes for jam bands just fall with widespread, older new grass like LS salmon.. string cheese.. yonder mountain SB.. really am digging todd snyder,

anyway, PLQ reunion would be sweet as fuck. but, ya know, i'm a phil guy that has a hard on for warren haynes.
