I'm reading this poem at my Pa's funeral on Monday. It's the first real piece of poetry i've written in many years. I'm not particularly confident in my writing, but this is more a collection of memories of my beloved grandfather. He and my nana helped to raise me, and i wanted to honour him on his final day.

Granddad, Pa, Oupa

Granddad, Pa, Oupa
3 different names
Given to you by the 6 of us,
But the meaning was the same;
A beloved grandfather
A man who was loved
A man who loved.

Your kind and generous heart,
And your pumpkin scones
Were things of legend.
Seeing you deliver cakes to your neighbours
That you and nana had made;
Quick to offer a hand
Or a cup of tea,
Prospect St will never be the same.

As a little girl, we would wander through your garden hand in hand
You would show me your azaleas, camellias, orchids and everything in between
Every colour of the rainbow, a scent I will never forget.
I would look at the afternoon sun filtering through the wisteria vine
A purple fire in the sky.
I would look up at you
And I was in heaven.

Now you are with your beloved, your Queenie, our beloved nanna
A reunion that would have been such a sight to see.
I’m sure that wherever you are, you’ll have your azaleas, camellias and orchids,
you’ll be making your cakes and pumpkin scones.
You’ll be strong, fit and happy.

Granddad, Pa, Oupa
You will be missed.
You are loved, will always be loved.
We are better people for having known you.

to you and yours

imo, good poetry is about whether the words are the right shape to carry the authors emotions not tricky use of metaphor and technical phrasing.
