I'm not into herbs or stuff like that to help with anxiety, depression, etc... But I read a few things I found interesting:

MolokoVelocet said:
The shit alone (note: he talks about Gotu Kola) is benzo-quality anti-anxiety with really nice euphoric aspect
and has an unbelievable synergy with lyrica. Studies show it significantly ups
levels of all amines in the brain and plays with the GABA system which i dont doubt.
Id chose Lyrica + Gotu Kola over Lyrica + Benzos any day.

Gotu Kola alone is actually very similair to Lyrica is numorous ways.
Both are as effective as benzo's for my anxiety and both are miracle drugs
as far as im concerned regarding depression.

According to this poster, Gotu Kola is like benzos, euphoric, similar to Lyrica, helps with depression also...

There's not much info on it on Bluelight, but I found this on Pubmed:

Evaluation of anxiolytic properties of Gotukola - (Centella asiatica) extracts and asiaticoside in rat behavioral models.

The ayurvedic medicinal plant Gotukola (Centella asiatica) was evaluated for its anxiolytic properties. Specifically, this study assessed the effects of: Gotukola plant materials of different genotypic origin; hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of Gotukola; and asiaticoside, a triterpenic compound isolated from Gotukola. Various paradigms were used to assess the anxiolytic activity, including the elevated plus maze (EPM), open field, social interaction, locomotor activity, punished drinking (Vogel) and novel cage tests. The EPM test revealed that Gotukola, its methanol and ethyl acetate extracts as well as the pure asiaticoside, imparted anxiolytic activity. Furthermore, the asiaticoside did not affect locomotor activity, suggesting these compounds do not have sedative effects in rodents.

[Effects of total triterpenes of Centella asiatica on the corticosterone levels in serum and contents of monoamine in depression rat brain]

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the possible effect of antidepressant effect of total triterpentes of Centella asiatica. METHODS: The corticosterone levels in serum were measured by fluorescence spectroscopy. The contents of monoamine neurotransmitters and their metabolites in rats cortex, hippocamopus and thalamus were evaluated by using HPLC with electrochemical detector. RESULTS: Significant reduction of the corticosterone level in serum and increase of the contents of 5-HT, NE, DA and their metabolites 5-HIAA, MHPG in rat brain were observed. CONCLUSION: The antidepressant effect of total triterpenes of Centella asiatica may be involved in ameliorating the function of HPA axis and increasing the contents of monoamine neurotransmitters.

Has anyone tried Gotu Kola?
Do you think it's worth it, or just some weak herbal crap?

Does anyone know the pharmacology of Gotu Kola?
What substances does it contain?

Concerning anxiety, is it like benzos, more like Kava, or more like Valerian?
MolokoVelocet seems to find it very enjoyable...

There's not much infos on it on Bluelight or on the net, so if anyone knows anything about Gotu Kola, his informations will be welcomed.

I can't find any info on this supposed, GABA/amine interaction quoted above...

Who knows... if it's cheap, buy some... are there any erowid reports?

god i love this stuff.

In no way is this weak herbal crap. As far as psychotropic effects ive tried most known and hyped herbs out there and ive found them either completely dissapointing or just too weak to bother with.

Gotu Kola was the first to work reaaaly well for me. I DO have anxiety issues though (genetic + i got 12 huge cracked mercury fillings in my mouth... :( causing PD symptoms, having them removed as soon as i got the $) and Ive been on every anxiety med u can think of. Lyrica was extremely effective for me but kind of pooped out on me about 75% over period of 3 months. Got a big bottle of k-pins but i chose to live in the real world so i avoid those

Ill list its effects (in no order)

Its anxiolitic effects are pretty powerful/effective. Anxiolitic being relieves anxiety... not fucks you up. To me it feels like an extremely well rounded mildly warm euphoriant anti-convulsant with NO side effects, body load, etc. Actually provides a mild sustained body high (super-mild/mild clean OP type warmth, relaxation) Very strong mood stabalization effect with a mild to moderate mood lifting effect. Provides a warm fresh feeling of.... best word to describe it is optimism (similair to a mellow d-mphetamine optimism, milder but more sustained with no amp CND stim or side effects.)

Social Anxiety effects. Very significant SAD anti-anxiety effects. The herb itself has a somewhat empathetic socially stimulating effect (milder but similair to MDMA and/or alchohol in this effect, though longer sustained).

Antidepressant effects are quite pronounced (im not depressed but i can very easily see it having huge indications in antidepression, stacks ontop of SSRI's/TCA's, etc with no drug interaction...) Long and linear effect ta boot.

Great for Bi-Polar with its anticonvulsant effects (documented. strong as far as i can tell). VERY effective mood stabalizer. Makes you happy and stable all day

Gotu Kola is also a considerably effect smart drug. A pretty effective one too so dont expect to get fucked up off it. It will sharpen you up, especially socially (anxiolitic effect at work?) without any semblance of "sharp". No edge at all... not a stimulant. Provides a slightly warm optomistic clear-headed fresh feeling. Its a wierd and very unique drug effect. It will "wake your brain up" and sharpen you with no CNS stimulation.

POTENTIATION and drug mixing. This drug MUST have a unique action of effect cause the shit mixes gorgeously with every drug ive tried so far. Potentiates some and just mellows/euphoriates (<--new word... i think, use it)others.
i will never use OP's, herb, benzos/barbs, alchohol, amphetamines, Lyrica, Lucy, Shroomz, or DMT,etc without it. It synergizes soooo well with all of these. i still have trouble believing how well this mixes. usually most shit mixes horribly for me.

O, and it has HUGE documented neuroprotecive properties. (almost entirely protects brain temporarily from various heavy metals and common toxins poisoning according to a pubmed study... and just like most other neuroprotectives (especially nootropic ones) it probably protects against alot else). its my 2nd favorite hangover preventer, 2nd to ALA... and water ofcourse)

Long story short it blows me away how unknown this shit is in this community. Ive been euphoric FOR finding it SINCE finding it, asside from the herbs mild euphoriant effect :).
this is a small fraction of what i have read about this shit in my hours of mining pubmed/goodle-scholar/various boards. when i get some time ill start linking some really good shit.

TIP: search google for gotu kola and message boards or forums (aka "gotu kola forum") to get an idea of what other people think about this. Most overwhelmingly consistantly possitive posts ive ever read regarding an herb. cant remember a single "it doesnt work" or "this stuff sucks" post. Honestly 80% of personal experiences ive read are VERY possitive to say the least.

SORRY FOR LONG POST, TRIED TO MAKE EASY TO READ

I believe you MolokoVelocet, but I would really like someone else's experience with Gotu Kola....
I won't try a substance because one person tells me it's great, I need other persons input...

There's a paper on pubmed saying Gotu Kola acts on GABA receptors; and there's another paper on Pubmed saying it acts on Monoamines levels (serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine)

I'll post the links later

no offense Jason, you're one of my favorites on this board....but...

LOL, i dont remember telling you to try it dude... though I am relieved you wont try a substance because one person tells you its great, that'll extend your life expentancy considerably ;

you sound as if im trying to push gotu kola on you lol... could give a shit less who takes it, just trying to contribute some constructive detailed info. Was posting a detailed overview of my experience with it... wasnt even talking to you specifically, just outlining its effects on me.

anyways, ive got those studies you mentioned saved on my computer. Not to hard to locate/relocate using pubmed so ill do that ASAP

if you want other peoples experiences then do a google search of "gotu kola message board" or "gotu kola forum". There are a ton of other message boards talking about it and countless threads accessable within the first 2 pages of the search. and i mean LOTS

I never told that I was interested in Gotu Kola because of you, and wanted to try it because of you...
I'm really interesetd in what you have to say about it, that's it....

Anyway, here are those Pubmed studies, one saying Gotu Kola has anxiolytic properties, the other saying that it raises monoamines neurotransmitters levels...

lol - I PMed MolokoVelocet about it seeing one of his posts.. something I gotta try out.

Guess I should do some research, I know i've seen bottles of it capped up at your local whatever store but usually those are crap etc (..never bought a bottle though). I'd definitley want to locate some really potent capped up stuff, or find the real thing and make a tea (or whatever ya can do with it! extract..). Definitely sounds like something i'd like to try just going by what Moloko says alone :).

If I don't procrastinate and then forget, if i get some i'll definitely report. (I wrote it down on paper where i'll see it, i found that.. actually works hehe)

Aye Jayson. Misnunderstanding. No worries

yaesutom like my lazy roundabout method of providing you links to studies relevant to the claims i made? lol. Go to a Mothers Market or a really cool herb/suppliment store and buy it in bulk.

it costs me about a buck an ounce in the bulk herbs section. Needless to say i drink tons of this shit every day :) im actually on day 3 of my week long break from it after drinking it for months as tolerance sllllooowwwlllly builds over time and cessation is supposed to bring me back to baseline.

How "tasty" is this tea? Any special instructions(how long to steep, etc)?
I am on week two of 150mgs(75mg twice daily) of Lyrica and i have to say it is much of what people have been saying it is. I'm not sure about the anxiety cure thing yet, but wow, my chronic daily headaches/migraines have been greatly dimished. Yippee! I'm going to ask my dr to up my dose, hopefully by next week. Bummer that even with excellent insurance it prescription cost $40.....so, since i am always on the quest to find a cure for my debilitating social anxiety, i am sincerely interested in the gotu kola. I had always thought it was a stimulant since (i think) it is often included in those Red Bull type energy drinks. Maybe it is just put in there to help soften the blow of all the nasty stimulants and crap people are injesting? Anyway, if you have a link to a website or something that would help out on the tea-making, t'would be greatly appreciated!

"A double-blind, placebo-controlled study on the effects of Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) on acoustic startle response in healthy subjects.

Bradwejn J, Zhou Y, Koszycki D, Shlik J.

Royal Ottawa Hospital and the Department of Psychiatry, University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. [email protected]

Investigations of the pharmacologic profile of medicinal plants have revealed that a number of plants with purported anxiolytic activity bind to cholecystokinin (CCK) receptors. This finding is intriguing in view of the proposed involvement of CCK in the pathophysiology of fear and anxiety. This double-blind, placebo-controlled study was undertaken to evaluate the anxiolytic activity of Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) in healthy subjects. Gotu Kola has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. Recent studies in the rat have shown that long-term pretreatment with Gotu Kola decreases locomotor activity, enhances elevated-plus maze performance, and attenuates the acoustic startle response (ASR). In this study, the authors evaluated the effects of Gotu Kola on the ASR in humans. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive either a single 12-g orally administered dose of Gotu Kola (N = 20) or placebo (N = 20). The results revealed that compared with placebo, Gotu Kola significantly attenuated the peak ASR amplitude 30 and 60 minutes after treatment. Gotu Kola had no significant effect on self-rated mood, heart rate, or blood pressure. These preliminary findings suggest that Gotu Kola has anxiolytic activity in humans as revealed by the ASR. It remains to be seen whether this herb has therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of anxiety syndromes."

I'm trying it out at the moment and have noticed some effects. I have a slight resting tremor in my left hand which seems to have all but gone. Can't comment on the tea I have it in liquid form 1ml = 100mg and it tastes awefull.

This is interesting from what he is saying this herb looks like a good all rounder. Sadly a dose was not mentioned, any idea on anyone?

I have a herbal supplement which contains the following:

Gotu Kola – Centella asiatica (extract) - 150 mg
Ginkgo Biloba – Ginkgo Biloba (extract) - 30 mg
per one tablet.

How much should I eat for anxiolytic properties? How often?
