Got Stuck with an 'Inked' 20euro note...

So I grabbed a taxi from Dublins city center home last night; had a great chat with the driver - seemed like a nice fellow and all that. The fair came to around 14.70 or something nearing, so when I got to my destination I pulled out a 50euro note and he handed me the change in notes and coins, with one of the notes being a 20.

So I jump out and he drives off, and as I'm walking up to the house I'm thinking to myself...that doesnt feel right. The twenty felt as if it had gone through the wash or something. I get into the light and I notice theres this blue ink all over the thing - so I'm presuming this was a note that was obviously part of a batch of stolen cash that had become stained with that security dye.

The note itself its actually legitimate - all the markings ie raised areas, watermarks etc are in order but its stained all over with this security dye. Now I know if I hand this into a police station I'm going to be given the inquisition and they'll take it off me and tell me to be on my way - and I dont want to be down 20euro as I'm bloody broke enough as it is.

Can anyone tell me what to do in a situation like this? Is there anywhere I can hand it in and get a proper 20 back? People are telling me the likes of those change machines in tescos etc will change it for me, but I'm afraid if I put it in and it scans for security ink then I wont get my 20note back at all...

Any advice?

Have you got any of those self service tills in your supermarket? you could use it to buy something small with and get the change that way. I don't know for sure but I doubt they'd check for that kinda dye ... I'm not 100% sure tho.

Really interesting story/situation endless btw.

go to the plex and change it there they have those real old machines there would be no security thing on that.

Incidentally, for anyone wanting to get rid of tons of change, lke a collection of 2p and 1p coins n whatnot, those self service tills don't have a limit on them, so you can pay in all copper if you're desperate and can't eat unless you raid the penny jar. Takes a while tho. I emptied mine ages ago and it worked! (plus: no embarrassment factor since it's a machine ;p)

lol, bet the people waiting behind you were struggling to force a polite smile :)

I was all stealth about it! ten minutes before closing so no-one around .. luckily you can just pour the pile of pennies in by the bag and it's not done by individually feeding em in ... so you just have to wait for the machine to just drop the pile through

I don't use those change converter machines where they take 10% off for their fee, they're a total rip off and they take advantage of poor folks ... always best to use em at the supermarket self service and get full value. I've started to just use a handful whenever I go now and do it regularly rather than accumulate them

Our Tescos has a machine which allows you to just empty all your coppers or any coin denomination at all and it counts it all.
Then you can have it back in notes if there was enough cash there but the machine will take a percentage of the total or you can press another button and it will give you a print out for the full amount to be spent in Tesco.
I went up one day with my tin full of coppers and got nearly £15 out of it.

sweet, top tip!

If you came by it legitimately, rather than in a bag with thousands of others, with a gun in your hands and the words 'everybody DOWN' on your lips, can't you just take it to a bank and say 'look, some twat's given me this, can I have a new one?'

Naaaa, when we get skint we raid one of me son's money boxes....now I know you can just dump a bucket full of coppers and foreign coins from the 80's through it opens up a lot more options for us.
