Good drugs for social anxiety?

Definitely Benzo's; more specifically, Xanax. But as forementioned, benzo addiction can be a bitch.

I had anxiety my first few years of high school, and that's when I first learned about Xanax. One day when I was looking for aspirin, I stumbled upon like 2-3 whole bottles of 2mg generic alprazolem in my dad's medicine cabinet (He gets anxiety occasionally, but hardly ever takes the 'script and they just accumulated) So I figured what the hell, I'll see if this stuff actually works. I remember in the beginning I would pop a few here and there before school, but eventually my tolerance just skyrocketed. And I also noticed that it was leading to more anxiety when I didn't take any. I remember one week I too 3-4mg before school everyday that week just to feel normal. Also, I would be acting kinda weird and not even realize it. On one particular day I popped about 5 or 6mg, could be more. I wasn't feeling anything kick in so I just kept taking more. I blacked out but thank god I made it home alive. I only remember bits and pieces of that night. One part I remember is driving and taking sharp curve at about 50mph and the tires screeching. I also remember trying to stay awake and eventually just passing out when I got home. After that I decided to just stop taking them cold turkey, and after a week or so I was back to normal , since I never developed a hardcore addiction to them. But believe me, I've heard some pretty bad stories about people who were prescribed them for years and basically going through hell just to taper off of them. Never the less, they're fun every now and then. I'm staying at my dad's house for the summer and I can't help but to steal one every once in a while =D

5-10mg Valium (Diazepam). I don't know about Xanax, I've only tried it once, the first time I tried a small dose of 0.25mg was fucking awesome though, after that it wasn't the same, even with 0.5mg.
Alcohol of course, is good for anxiety but you don't really want to smell like it, or your stomach may not be able to handle it, etc (many other reasons).
MDMA won't work if you are on SSRI anti-depressants.
Codeine seems to make me less social, I like to be by myself and enjoy my buzz, then again, that's just me.
Darvon is nice :-).

do a search on google for anti-anxiety drugs, or visit erowid.org
ask your doctor about a long term anti-anxiety drug. or maybe
seek some therapy like "cognitive behavioural therapy" to help you deal with anxiety. Just popping pills isn't going to help, trust me, because that's what I do :-) and I should really be going to a psychiatrist.

ok lets get a bit real for a second here, I don't know about your dealer but mine doesn't stock oxycodone or endone or any of those powerful opiate tablets.
Almost every drug used to treat anxiety has the motherfucking side effect of rebound anxiety, particually benzos and alcohol. Bad news.

I tried the "Get my life together and everything will be ok" route. Got mega fit, lost 10kg, quit pot quit cigs quit alcohol quit coffee only ate super healthy food......did this for a year and I was just as crippled by social anxiety as ever...maybe more.
Relief came in the form of Citalompram a SSRI that worked after 7 others didn't. I was on it for 4 years and don't think they are not addictive cos they are. You can get horribble withdrawl symtoms which mimic the symtoms you were trying to treat which often will send you right back onto them.
No, MDMA changed my life....to an extent. I am off the SSRI and roll occasionally and am more social now generally.

You can get significant withdrawl symptoms from benzos after only a week of use. Treat them with the greatest respect and they can be your best friend. Only take a strong dose when you are climbing the wall and about to do something you might regret. A half will get you off nicely to sleep or take the edge off for a night out. 2 nights in a row is too frequent.

Unfortunetly there is no magic panancea, you just have a bunch of tools, use them wisely.

right now i'm on zoloft for social anxiety...and its just not workin for me. i mean there is some slight difference, but i hate god damn antidepressants. i am thinking about asking my doc for a benzo, probably xanax. will xanax actually help you in the LONG RUN? as far as withdrawls..fuck it. i need help, its a big problem for me..

Some years ago, I was prescribed ssri's for several years. They worked at first and stopped working afterwards. Side effects increased. Stopping them was a nightmare.

I find that depression + anxiety somehow go together.

When I feel that state of mind coming on, I tend to medicate with L-tryptophan (or 5-htp, which is available in the US). After 2 or 3 days there is invariably a difference.

Exercising really helps me too. As does having goals in life.

I also cannot stress a healthy diet + detox enough, though ultimately the mind that does not want to will not function well in the healthiest of bodies.

What definitely makes it worse for me is anything with refined sugar, weed, and coffee.

Personally, I don't think any benzodiazepine (Xanax or any other) will help in the long run. It'll mask the symptoms, and later on you can't function without it. In that respect a bit like the SSRI's.

When it comes to herbs, I believe that a mix of Valerian + Hops + Melissa (and possibly passiflora - careful, that's an MAOI!) is great, as is Kava Kava if taken regularly.

onyxxtreme:
taking drugs for social problems, or any mental illness is the worst thing you can do.

Yes, I highly advise all schizophrenics, psychotics and people with bi-polar to stop taking their medication right now! then head over to onyxxtreme's place so he can show you the light.

i've decided to stop taking zoloft. if i talked to my doctor about prescribing xanax for my social anxiety, is there a possibility he would? or do the majority of doctors believe that's a bad idea... he sure seemed confident that zoloft would work great for me.

Doctors normally use benzo's as a last resort. But never the less, a doctor will probably put you on a benzo if you've (1) tried all different kinds of anti-depressants to no avail, (2) if your anxiety is that bad and severe and (3) if you also complain about not being able to get any sleep

They may not necessarily give you xanax, but may prescribe another benzo, like klonopin (which isn't so bad), or ativan, which seems to be the newest benzo out there.

^ ahh i see. zoloft is the first antidepressant i've tried, but i just don't think i want to be on one. my anxiety is pretty bad at times.... and my sleep is terrible right now. i basically can't sleep at all unless i take sleep meds.

Thanx for all the replys. One week ago i got prescribed Oxazepam (10mg) for my social anxiety. I havnt taken any yet. Im only going to use them when i really need them. I hope they will work for me.

rolling doesnt really cut it... your not yourself anymore... you losen up way to much... if im going to hang out with a bunch of people i dont know... ill drink a lil to losen myself up.. but not get trashed.. or maybe take a low dose of painkillers... i wouldent want a 80+ MG oxy buzz goin or a 40+ MG methadone buzz with people i dont know...

i would go with a non-drug, all natural solution first. herbal wise-valerian root, 5-htp, st john's wort comes to mind. vitamin supplements you may want to try are l-theanine, inositol, and DLPA.

benzo's are not a good solution to your social anxiety as it just covers up the symptoms and makes it worse in the long run. and you get to pick up an addiction along the way. yipee?!

yeah i'm looking for something to actually help me, not cover it up. i think i'm just not gonna take anything and deal with this shit myself...

Opiates would be your answer. Usually I'm the type that will always be out and hanging out with people, but I don't talk to much. But whenever I take some opiates, I'm in a good mood and can talk for hours. They just make me feel comfortable in any situation.

I'm prescribed Celexa for Depression which is an SSRI, my Doctor showed me this anti-depressant comparison chart, which showed Celexa and practically all the SSRI's (including Zoloft) to be very ineffective for anxiety. He has agreed to prescribe me short term Valium. Other anti-depressants not in the SSRI class, like Avanza, and MAOIs are said to be more effective for Anxiety, but they have more side-effects, interactions and other problems than the SSRI's, SNRI's, NARI's.

From what i've done in this order:
1. Good opioids (if you want to be relaxed at the same time)
2. Amphetamine/Methamphetamine (if you want to be wide awake and sharing toughts for a whole night)
3. Alcohol (if you dont care wheater it gets sloppy or not)
4. Weed mixed with slight doses of benzo or opiates until you can smoke weed and just feel 'righhhhtt'
5. Small benzo doses that dont make you sleep ie. 0.5mg-1mg of xanax, 0.5mg-1mg of lorazepam and so on
