Good drugs for social anxiety?

Alcohol: Good for parties and other social functions. Not practical for daily use, especially when you have work to do.

Opiates: The best option IMO, because they combine anti-anxiety with euphoria, no depression, no social anxiety. Basically, you not only don't feel anxious, but your self-esteem gets a great boost, at least for a few hours. The downside is that they are illegal, thus hard to obtain, expensive, you are likely to abuse, and of course, there are always the cops to deal with. Worst of all, they are highly addictive, and one builds a tolerance fast, thus compounding the above mentioned problems.

Benzodiazepines: Probably the best option. They are the most practical, because you can still do all your school work or job work on them, and they come from a doctor, so you don't have to worry about the cops, dealers, ridiculous prices, or running out of a supply, not to mention you get a doctor's guidance (take that for what it is worth). They work well for anxiety, very well, allow one to sleep great, and because of the lack of anxiety, one automatically feels better. The downsides are the addiction potential (and long withdrawal), tolerance, and they may make you TOO drowsy.

I hope that has helped.

I believe that benzos, amphetamines, and opiates all work great for social anxiety.

I'm currently prescribed Klonopin and Adderall. I find Klonopin helps a lot with reducing my anxiety, while the Adderall helps me be more focused and talkative when I'm around other people. I have pretty bad social phobia, and I find this drug combo works great for me.

If you choose the benzo route, I would recommend a long-acting drug like Klonopin or Valium. In my opinion, short-acting benzos like Xanax are a lot more addictive, and only should be used for preventing panic attacks or seizures.

As long as you take the benzo as prescribed and taper down slowly before you quit, you shouldn't feel any withdrawals.

god, just about any drug I can think of to be honest

any drug that makes me feel good makes me feel confident, thus very easy to talk to people, or run my mouth about something

my social anxiety drug of choice - opiates or coke

on coke I make the drunk people look anti social, its nuts

Opiates are great... I think something like Oxycodone (it's the one I haven't tried :() would be great, because of it's stimulating properties (apparently?).

From what I've experienced... popping 10mg of hydrocodone (no tolerance) will relax you and let you loosen up, without nodding out or being noticeable (because hydro is quite sedating).

dietary supplements: l-tryptophan & inositol
...and daily rigorous exercise
tryptophan is the precursor to serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that eases anxiety (general & social) when abundantly present in the brain.
inositol is a naturally occurring compound that, when taken in greater than usual amounts (the average person consumes about a gram of inositol per day), combats depression & anxiety.
daily exercise such as jogging causes the release of endorphins ("endogenous morphines"). as has been suggested here already, small doses of opiates lend nicely to comfortable socializing, so why not make use of the opiates originating in your own body? strenuous exercise has even been proven to be addictive, so you know that shit's good! :)
good luck!

Without a doubt, go with Oxycontin. You don't need to take a large dose, unless you have a pretty good tolerance. With no tolereance all you need is 20mgs. You could either bump it, or eat it depending on how long you want it to last and how strong you want it to be.

I've tried alprazolam for anxiety as well, with varying doses and routes of administration. It doesn't even compare with Oxy; Oxy wins hands down. But you won't get prescribed Oxy for it, so try the alprazolam first, or just buy oxy on the street.

They're both addicting and build up a quick tolerance so don't count on them as being cures. For that you'd need a psychological solution.

^^^ Yep, and meth turns you into a shit talking tweaker :)

MDMA turns you into a loved up e-tard...

Stimulants are no good for social anxiety, there effects are to powerful and you juts end up looking like a retard :D

are you people insane, retarded, or so caught up with the "drug lifestyle" that your common sense skipped town? the guy says he has social anxiety and you're telling him to take oxycontin? i guess that's fine if you avoid human contact for 6 out of 7 days of the week, and you don't mind friends thinking that you can't stand their company sober.
call me old fashioned, but i take serious questions, well, seriously. the rest of you oughtta be ashamed.
psychiatrists too for not knowing shit about the things they prescribe for anxiety.
basically i'm just mad at the whole "quick fix" philosophy. what drug do i take to _____. you know? and on that note, i'm going to (!!irony alert!!) go have a cigarette.

/end rant

edit: ok, he DID ask what drugs to take. i suppose it's his bad for going about social anxiety the wrong way. read my first post, dude. try that regimen first, and get some legitimate medical advice. if that doesn't work, then by all means, drown yourself in benzos until you're in worse shape than when you started.

Maybe "social anxiety" doesn't control his whole life... like Monday - Friday he's fine and then on Friday night when going out he gets really uncomfortable around large groups of people? I dunno... just can't assume he's a nervous wreck 100% of the time (maybe he is?)...

He has to be more clear :)

10mgs of meditation, maybe combined with some yoga.

Some exercise, and a good diet with no additives.

Also maybe 1 gram of going travelling abroad (great confidence building excercise).

Abstenence works for a lot of people too.....

most drugs will end up making the problem worse...

may i add... breathing exercises.

no additives in your diet. raw food... maybe a detox might help.

benzos will make you do stupid things
THEN when you're off em your problems will be 19819821983 times worse.
trust me.

i suppose all the drugs listed above can be used as a social lubricant.
benzoes were a good anxiolytic 4 me but like everyone else-only good in short term use
i had to do a benzoe dettox a cupla years ago,the doc told me he could only legally give me 50mgs per day then reduce doses by 5mgs every 2 weeks.
(i have since relapsed.)
buspirone is listed as a non-benzo anxiolytic but i have never used it.

Jeezum, some of you people need to get a clue (or maybe I'm just missing the joke). Liquor as a treatment for anxiety???? That's like a bullet in the brain as a treatment for a headache. 8)

Anxiety/panic has been a problem for me since my late teens. I tried self-medicating myself for years with booze (HEAVILY), which since alcohol naturally fucks up your central nervous system even more left me near a complete emotional and mental breakdown. I'd get all fucked up and feel better for a very very short period, then the depression would come crashing in and the anxiety would come back in triplicate. It got to the point where I became terrified to leave my house, and when I DID have to leave I could barely make it down the street from shaking so bad- and of course the thoughts that everyone around me was watching me and could see exactly how big a freak I am. I get the impression that some people think severe anxiety is some kind of a joke or something. Well it's not. It's not being nervous, it's not being uncomfortable or feeling awkward, things that everyone on earth feel at one time or another. Chronic anxiety is fucking hellish, it is horrible , it's pure terror, and it's a state I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Anyways, benzos are far and away the most effective treatment for all forms of anxiety (and for most forms of panic disorder). They're the perfect drug to treat these problems, but as others have stated, benzos are also a double-edged sword- with the downsides being they can be extremely addictive, that you develop tolerance which means you have to start taking more and more just to achieve the same effects, and that it's such an easy and tempting panacea to just pop a Xanax when you feel a stressful situation coming on- which means that you aren't developing any coping mechanisms other than a pharmaceutical one to deal with these problems, which if you think about it is kind of a shitty way to have to live life. But for me right now, my anxiety is so overwhelmingly severe I feel benzos are the only recourse I have, with the alternative becoming a recluse too afraid to leave my house.

Beyond the benzos, there are the SSRI's (Prozac, Celexa, Lexapro, Luvox, Zoloft etc. etc. etc.). Some of these (particularly Luvox) have shown great promise as far as treating social anxiety disorder. I've taken a few of them, none have worked for me (but then again I was drinking at the time, which pretty much defies the whole purpose of taking the drugs in the first place). Now that I'm sober, I'm planning on giving an SSRI another go- mainly cause I do NOT want to venture into the land of benzodiazepine addiction. Then there's gabapentin (Neurontin), which I frankly don't know much about beyond that it's a seizure medication that works on the GABA receptors and has shown efficacy for treating social anxiety in clinical trials.

Then there is the natural stuff, Kava, GABA, ashwaganda, damiana, passion flower, etc. etc, all of which have shown some promise and deserve much more study. And of course there's the coping mechanisms, deep-breathing, meditation, too many to list but many people swear by these things.

I think the main thing above all else though is to make sure and take care of your shit. Be good to yourself. Try to eat well, get plenty of sleep, all those thing Momma used to say.

totally agree, my comment about opiates of stimulants, I was thinking like for social anxiety for one night at a party or similar situation.

i think using any drug to solve a daily social anxiety problem would be a huge mistake. then of course your social anxiety wouldnt seem like such a big problem next to being addicted.

work on your confidence

go to the gym, read some interesting books, have some interesting life experiences, force yourself to meet people (e.g. study abroad - as mentioned)

the more you like yourself, the easier others will come to like you
