Hey people im a new member here. Thought i would see what you guys think about mexico. Im going with my wife and inlaws but am considering sneaking off a little and partaking in some of the less wholesome things mexico has to offer. There may not even be any of that close to where im going. Were going to riviera maya. And just so its known im on felony probation and got a passport and approved to go. Anyway it should be fun but im. Curious if anyone has traveled there and can tell me a little bit of whats not advertised (with an emphasis on sex and other illicit activities)

Tips:

1 - Don't drink the tap water or anything that's touched it without being cooked (lettuce, tomatoes, salsa that's not super-spicy, ice, ice, and ice).

2 - Don't go looking for trouble (which is the same as "sex and other illicit activities"). Mexico is not the place for that. It's not like Thailand or Costa Rica or Brazil or other places you've heard about. It is downright dangerous to do things there that are not typical tourist activities, especially if you don't know what you're doing. There are lots of criminals and cops and they are both equally dangerous. Mexico is a very conservative country and tourists who are caught doing illegal sex or drug things are dealt with very harshly, much more so than the same things in the U.S., Britain, Australia, etc.

3 - Read #2 until you can repeat it word for word. Trust me.

Back in the day, Tiajuna(sp?) and Juarez were the only relatively riskfreeplace where a gringo could easily score with little fear of repercussions. These days, Idk? Don't fuck with pirates. Maybe establish a "friendship" with a local working at the resort and ask her or him after gaining a little trust.

I agree with these posts.

Don't do it OP. Mexico is so dangerous now I have many Mexican friends who do not even go there to visit family.

The ones that do hire private security and just go where they have to go with the security, and then are driven back to where they are staying and then to the airport with security.

My Mexican friends told me how if you're not Mexican, and do not look like most people there in the area of Mexico you are in, do not speak with a Mexican dialect/accent, or are obviously not from there you are a target for danger, and it's very dangerous to go alone to places.

Have fun and just relax.

Enjoy the chili and salsa there. Eat some Arbol, Piquin, Habaneros, Serrano, and Guajillos. They are good for you.

Common sense, if you realy do feel the need to go and "taste the local cuisine" just be carefull because you've obviously seen the TV programes and heard how dangerous some places can be. like someone else said make a new trustworthy friend. Have your fun, just be cleaver about it.

I appreciate the advice and i think i will take it, theres no harm in staying at the resort and drinking. Like i said ive never been so i appreciate the tips. Thanks guys.

Good man. %)

To add to what I said above about the water, ice is OK in drinks with alcohol.

1.) If you're going to the Mayan Riviera, you're only likely to get play in Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Of course, those are also overpriced tourist traps full of people looking to get one over on foreigners.

2.) The food is great; you won't regret eating local at least once. I was in Mexico for five months, and had no horror stories, and even my buddies had more trouble with stomach bugs than Montezuma's Revenge. Bottled water is cheap and absolutely everywhere, even in the poorest towns, and you're not likely to get ice with anything not a mixed drink, anyway.

3.) Check out Tulum. It's pricey, but fairly small, with amazing beaches, bombed-out hippies, and backpackers who'll probably ply you with anything you can imagine (and perhaps a few things you can't).

Learn some Spanish. Dont be a stingy gringo to the locals. Meet an honest woman and make her your girlfriend. She'll act as your guide and will help if you're in a bind.
