going into a headshop...

Forgive me if this post/question seems retarded or is in the wrong section of the forum.
I've just recently started smoking pot (love it) and in a few days I'll be done my long Christmas break and finally back in my University dorm room residence. The city I live in happens to have a headshop downtown. I've been in once or twice, and bought a nice hat with a pot leaf on it. :\

I really haven't a clue as to how I should 'act' while in a headshop or how to ask about buying this and that...
I know some owners will kick customers out for using the term 'bong' and such.
Anyways! While I like smoking a joint as much as the next stoner, I like smoking from bongs and pipes more.

I live in Canada, New Brunswick and I'm fairly sure the legal age to buy cigarettes in most of the province is 19. So would that age limit effect me being able to buy a bong and such?
I'm 18 now, turning 19 in about a month or so.
But I've noticed EVERYONE seems fairly tolerant about recreational pot smoking...
any tips or help here?
 
Just be friendly, your neighborhood head shop should be a friendly place that won't give you a hard time. Just don't say the word "bong" (call them "waterpipes"), never make references to weed, and they'll be cool.

If you're old enough to buy cigarettes, you're old enough to buy weed paraphernalia. :)
 
Im in Aus, and im 17 and have bought bong's no problem over here, just walk in and act completely normal about it.

Also, ive found the only reason why they wouldnt sell it to you is because there are older people in the store, it look's bad selling to people who are young, and this is when your likely to get asked for ID.

Plus your 1 month away, I rekon for anyone to turn you away because of your a month short of being legal, is f*ckin asshole8);)

if they won't allow me to buy anything because I'm not of legal age to buy cigs then I'll just wait a month or so and continue using joints.

I'm extremely shy and nervous around people naturally though...so acting 'normal' will be hard.

I can relate.I got pretty bad social anxiety. I suppose ive just been doin this stuff for a while, and am use to it a bit.
 
just don't talk about being "high" and use "water pipe" instead of "bong" and "tobacco" instead of "weed" and you'll be fine.
 
I hear those horror stories about getting kicked out... All the headshops around here are pretty open about what's going on and what they are selling. Most of the older guys talk about salvia and weed all the time. I guess it's about location.

Honestly, I wouldn't even want to give a headshop that would kick me out for talking about weed or saying "bong" my business.
 
That is so weird that things like happen, I assumed things were way more liberal in Canada than here in Australia. Here we call them bong shops.

Just order one online if you are that paranoid man. Sounds like you'd have a panic attack if you went into the store.
 
Yo wassup I work in a music/bong shop. I can always tell when people are trying to put on an act, so just be yourself and have confidence and be assertive. There is no law regarding age for buying bongs and whatnot. If you act all nervous and stuff it's not like I'll be rude if you're all shy and stuff, however that may heighten the chances of making jokes with my co-worker about you either while you are there and oblivious or shortly after you leave. LOL!
 
dude, relax. it's just a regular store, except probably full of potheads. they need your business just like any other store. and I have never heard of this business about people having a problem with you calling a bong a bong in a head shop.
 
In many states in the USA, drug paraphernalia is prohibited. Therefore, "bongs", which are defined as devices used for smoking cannabis, are illegal. Water tobacco pipes are legal though. Same exact product, with a different name, changes the legality.

There are convenience store owners who have been prosecuted for selling roses in glass tubes as crack pipes in some states, because they weren't careful enough to create plausible deniability about the nature of the sales.

That must have been what happened with the "Chong Bongs"
 
It's fairly easy man, alot of people freak out their first time going into a headshop because they hear all these stories about being kicked out. Just act your usual self, don't even bother to say water pipe. Just point and describe it over the shelf or whatever.
Like: oh can I have a look at that $55 one, or can I see the one with the pink stripes.
My headshop people know me and talk openly about stuff which is awesome.
Basically though if you get a good headshop it'll be a bunch of stoners super happy to sell you anything and just glad to know there are other stoners out there.
 
^ damn you guys have some shadey shops, theres 2 headshops within reasonable distance of me. 1 of them is pretty open with it all, walk in say I want that bong, that mephedrone and them rizzla no problem.

Then the other 1 is ehh, grim, very poor quality everything in there. 3rd world rizzla. And if your remotely stoned the guy is shadey...:(
 
Dude I'm in Ottawa .
When I bought my bongs I was 16 and no one cares.

Smoke shops are usually run by stoners or immigrants who just wanna make money
 
Whaaat thats crazy!! In the UK most headshop owners use drugs themselves! Theres an old lady at one headshop and she gives reccomendations on all the products, what she likes etc.

My mate brought some seeds, she said how customers would post pics of there harvest but would rather they gave her a sample:P

I asked if they had a crack styled pipe and they didn't care lol.
 
For everyone calling me a dude and man...I'm a girl. lol Not that that is particularly relevant...I just wanted to clear things up.
In any case thanks for all the advice. I have a little more confidence when I go next time.
The first time I went in the people running the store looked like a mid 40s couple...so I can't be certain as to how friendly they are.
