God Doesn't Care If You Smoke Weed; Pastors Focus On Decriminalizing Unjust Drug Laws

A network of pastors is speaking out against the so-called "war on drugs" and the devastating effect it has had, particularly on the black community.

At a conference called "View from the Pulpit: Faith Leaders and Drug Decriminalization," held at American Baptist College in Nashville, religious leaders focused on the moral injustice of the drug laws, rather than the morality of drugs themselves.

In a press release released in advance of the conference, potential attendees were reminded that African-Americans comprise only 13 percent of the U.S. population and 13 percent of drug users. Yet, they make up 38 percent of those arrested for drug law violations and 59 percent of those convicted of drug law violations.

One conference attendee, the Rev. John Jackson from Trinity United Church of Christ in Gary, Indiana, spoke on camera (see video above) about his beliefs on God and weed:

"I have had several people share with me privately, 'Reverend, I smoke weed and I know I shouldn't.' I say, 'Let me stop you right there. I don't believe the God we serve is that small or petty to be concerned about you smoking weed. I don't think God cares about that.' I let them know that our God is too big to be concerned about somebody smoking a joint."

Awesome, now we just need the church to accept women, gays and people who don't believe the christian myth of the universe and everyone will be happy.

Maybe I was a little harsh there, it is good to see a positive message of acceptance no matter where it comes from, It's just a shame that there is not agreement and coherence across the whole of a religion, because I'm sure if I asked the local christian minister here about pot he would have a completely different and condemning view of it, even though they are supposedly of the same faith in the same god.

Now if the Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury came out and said pot is totally ok and followed that up with instruction to all their priests and ministers to adopt the same doctrine with soundly reasoned theology, philosophy and scripture to back it up .... Then we would be getting somewhere.

Why do we need the church to do anything? It's a rotten, outdated concept which enslaves people's minds.

Great news! It's always nice to hear about religious folks actually doing what Jesus would have.

Whether god is imaginary or not is irrelevant, what is relevant is that there is no real division between church and state when it comes to moral laws, and the state is the one who polices those laws and fucks with your personal freedoms as a result of that, so the cops are pretty much clergy with guns.

So to see a glimmer of reason and acceptance (well maybe not acceptance but at least tolerance) about things like cannabis use from within the institutions of religion is a good thing IMO, regardless of whether their myth of the universe is correct or not.

God wouldn't care one way or the other what you do; you were put here with the ability to do anything except violate the rules that created the universe itself, like you can't destroy energy. If you go around destroying energy, God will get pissed off.

Why do humans like to project themselves and their humanly feelings onto God anyway? If this all loving, all powerful God created you and gave you this world to destroy or do what you want with, why would God take it personally? Because God is as spiteful as human's themselves? lol I'd fucking hope not because humans are terrible creatures.

anyway, God will forgive you Atheists for jumping to conclusions, what else are you supposed to think when there is no proof? you should be agnostic, you cynical fucks but that's your choice.

The article is great though, as much as people hate religion and the church, especially the Catholic Church, go read some of the encyclicals the various Pope's have written, they are filled with knowledge, wisdom and compassion beyond what you would ever belief if you have not read them. They are EXTREMELY intelligent and caring people.

You can bash the church as a whole and say it's corrupt and you're right and that religion should be separate from the state but you cannot deny people their freedom of religion and to believe in whatever they want. Besides, it's super interesting to go read the old testament and the bible from a historical perspective, they are wonderful (sometimes boring and fucked) pieces of work. I highly doubt it came from God but they do (as well as other religious texts) set up a relatively sound framework for living life in society especially considering how old the texts are.

Jesus likely ingested some form of cannabis anyway, historically, back then people were getting high. Shamans used drugs, how are things any different today? well prohibition, so yeah fuck prohibition.

In my view, the divine is very understanding of the things people need to do to get by. Its wrong to imply that secular religion is better than not.

BL takes over the papacy, now that would be an interesting day for religion :P

Lol who gives a shit! God is imaginary. I thought everyone here could at least get that
I can't prove that you aren't imaginary. Go figure.

I'd actually sooner prove "God" as not "imaginary" than I could you, in one scope.

Can't you just be happy that more people are opening their mind to the idea of decriminalization and legalization rather than bitching about how they have different beliefs than you.
