Global Drug Survey 2014

What is the average price paid for a gram of cocaine? Which are the most enjoyable drugs to take ... and the least? Has anyone ever told you that they think you have a drinking problem?

These are some of the questions in the annual Global Drug Survey. For the second year, Fairfax Media is partnering with the initiative, to help discover the truth about drug and alcohol use in our society. Last year more than 6600 Australians took part, making it the largest survey of current drug users ever undertaken in this country.

This quiz is based on some of the results of last year's survey. The answers may surprise you:

To take this year's survey, click here (it should take about 20 minutes to complete).

The survey is run by UK addiction psychiatrist and researcher Adam Winstock, and this year will run with media partners in 17 countries, across four continents and in 10 different languages.

It will be the biggest global survey of drug users ever conducted, Dr Winstock said.

“With so many partners and supporters, we are hoping for a game-changer of a survey with 50,000 to 100,000 people taking part from around the world,” he said.

Last year's Australian results revealed the huge burden of alcohol on middle-class Australia, with more than half the 6000 surveyed drinkers consuming alcohol at risky levels.

Scores had sought emergency department help, with the most common number of drinks consumed before seeking assistance being 12 standard drinks.

The survey also revealed the growing burden of prescription drug abuse, with about half of all respondents being prescribed addictive anti-anxiety and pain medication in the past year. Of those using anti-pain opioids, nearly a third said they took them to assist relaxation.

The results helped give a snapshot of drug use among those not commonly targeted in research on drug use. Overall, the 6600 respondents were an educated, healthy, heterosexual, Anglo-Saxon and well-off bunch - about a quarter earned more than $100,000 a year.

Results of the survey were published in the British Medical Journal, the Lancet and Addiction, and were used in a project called the drugs meter, where people can find out how their drug use compares to others.

Other media partners include The Huffington Post, The Guardian, Mixmag and Die Welt.

It looks like its just based on the number of different drugs you've taken over a lifetime. I had 24, which scored me in the top 10% as well. These included tobacco, caffeine, and alcohol, so it's not like everything on the list was really out there.

Why would you take this survey?? It probably registers you in some god awful database and sent to the DEA or local police departments and then you will be harrassed anytime a cop gets behind you.

Paranoid much?

Anyway, I wonder what the threshold is for that top 10% - I had 50 drugs on mine...

I took their alcohol assessment too based on how much alcohol I used to average in a week... needless to say, I'm glad I quit. I scored in the top 5% on that one... 7500 calories of alcohol a week (or 22.7 cheeseburgers) and being at 115.7 on the chart when they factored in my depression, anxiety, and medication use... Its amazing I'm not dead. I didn't realize that I was really that high up there on alcohol compared to everyone else. That test actually had like 600 or 700 tests from Colorado too so its even more embarrassing.

I don't use any so I don't even have a reason to take the survey but it's good to warn you guys to be paranoid if you use any substances that the gov't will lock you away for and/or ruin your life forever if your caught with it.. Being paranoid is essential for any drug user, it keeps you out of trouble..

I'm just going to laugh and go about my day rather than feed the troll.

^ seriously? Was about 30 minutes for me...

I think 20 minutes was for an average person... I think it is safe to say that most of us on Bluelight are FAR from average lol

haha you are absolutely right. They probably assume the average person will be filling out 2 or 3 categories, but most of us probably had to fill out all of them lol, I did.

I was stoned while I took it too, so I had to read some of the questions twice ;)
