Lately I've seen a lot of threads with no BLUA issues closed before getting a chance to have any feedback. It seems like the prevailing course of action is to close first and let the grievances be aired afterwards, as if though giving an unsavoury thread a chance would cause harm. By closing such threads, the only thing that is accomplished is fast-tracking them to the second page (the fate of all [unstickied] theads, really), but closing them also incinerates the opportunity for a thread that might seem useless to anchor feedback that could be useful to the OP and others.

Long story short; what's the harm in giving a sour thread a chance?

I can't recall previous examples but this thread is the one I saw today that reminded me that I've seen this a few times in other subforums lately.

The situation isn't threatening to the OP's health/safety and I'm sure seeing the doc about it has crossed his mind but it looks like he's just looking for some feedback to help clarify a direction for him.

I agree that some threads are closed prematurely, and I appreciate that people don't want to always PM the mod or RP the thread asking for it to be reopened since nobody wants to appear to be telling a mod how to do their job.

However, it's the easiest way to make such requests/recommendations, and it's the way that I currently do it. Once a particular mod gets a few of the threads they closed reported asking for them to be reopened, they will likely think again before closing threads in the future. But you can't expect a mod to change something if it is never brought to their attention, which is why I suggest PMing them or reporting the thread.

i know anon and homeless are a bit of exception, but i tend to close most of the posts that i don't move elsewhere. i do this to prevent them from being bumped a few months/years down the road with a spam post. it happens fairly frequently and i would rather just take care of the issue by closing the thread.

hey thujune

what happens when you contact the moderator/staff in question - either by pm or by reporting the thread - and politely ask them to reopen a thread?

alasdair

I don't particularly have enough interest in the threads to PM anyone about it, but IME a good portion of seemingly useless threads, when given a chance, do turn into something worthwhile. I know the other side of the fence is well represented by members who report threads and post negatively just because they don't like it but they have that freedom because they aren't mods. I'm just saying mods could perhaps consider doing a brief mental audit of their reason for closing threads before following through with that action.

out of curiously, can you think of any other threads that illustrate your example?

mods are usually left up to moderating how they see fit. some teams prefer to close threads while others prefer to let them fall off the main page. i let the mods decide how they want to moderate for the forums i oversee and only step in if there is a noticeable issue.

no, I can't recall other examples now. I hope this isn't escalating into an issue, this is just a note left in the suggestion box in the hope that mods will consider what could be lost when a thread is closed instead of regarding threads as waste before they have had an opportunity to forge a direction.
