Girl overdoses on espresso coffee

Monday, 13 August 2007
A teenager was taken to hospital after overdosing on espresso coffee.

Jasmine Willis, 17, developed a fever and began hyperventilating after downing seven double espressos while working at her family's sandwich shop.

The student, of Stanley, County Durham, was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, where doctors confirmed she had overdosed on caffeine.

She has since made a full recovery and is now warning others about the dangers of excessive coffee drinking.

Ms Willis, who had thought the coffees were single measures, said the effects were so severe that she began laughing and crying for no reason while serving customers at the shop.

I was having palpitations, my heart was beating so fast and I thought I was going into shock

She developed a fever and began struggling to breathe after being sent home by her father.

"My nerves were all over the place.

"I was drenched. I was burning up and hyperventilating.

"I was having palpitations, my heart was beating so fast and I thought I was going into shock.

"I did not realise this could happen to you and I only hope other people learn from my mistake."

The teenager, who was allowed home after a few hours of observation, suffered side effects for days afterwards and now says she cannot stand the sight of coffee.

Her father Gary, who runs The Sandwich Bar in Stanley, said: "She did not realise she was drinking double measures.

"I have always stressed to my children the importance of moderation but Jasmine got caught out on this occasion."

This is terrible - I want this drug banned in case more addicts will have to go through this, I know this hateful, remorseless drug can take even the sanest man and turn him into a crazed criminal.
As this was highly potent 'expresso' version of the drug it should be Class A and maybe Lattes and Moccas Class B, I also have evidence that Adolf Hitler, Saddam Hussain and Jefferey Dahmer drank coffee and we know what they did. . . . coincidence?

Now I will make a post about what Grand Theft Auto is doing to our kids.

Does it seem to anyone else like she overreacted? I've had all the symptoms she described above from Caffeine OD as well as from PEA OD, but I get the same exact feeling if I overexert myself at the gym after having not gone for awhile. Yeah it feels awful, but it's very very temporary.

On the other hand I suppose she couldn't have known what was happeneing, and better safe than sorry is a good idea.

As ridiculous as this sounds - I once knew a guy who ordered at least two 8-shot caramel macchiatos everyday...

He owned a meat factory and one day when the health inspectors came he shot all 3 of them...

I'm not offering any link between caffeine and multiple homicide killers - just thought it was worth mentioning.

Well the DEA has all the evidence and rationale it needs now to put caffeine into Schedule I, using the same tactics it did when scheduling MDMA.

Of course they won't, because the coffee junkies would skin them alive...

naw man, its because of starbucks and other special interest groups. Duhhhhhh....

You're right, and to think if we had had some "X Shoppe" and "CafE" franchises back in 1985, MDMA would be an OTC recreation today... :)

How do you not know that could happen? Taking enough of anything can harm your body, caffeine isn't a exception. Hopefully other's don't need to learn from her mistake, and already know the obvious.

Jasmine Willis, 17, could hardly breathe and was taken to hospital with a high temperature and heart palpitations.

She had drunk almost three times the recommended daily amount of caffeine in just four hours.

Jasmine Willis was hospitalised after she drank seven double espressos

Miss Willis, a student, was working part-time out in her father Gary's recently-opened sandwich bar after sitting her GCSEs.

She began her coffee binge last Wednesday after getting only five hours' sleep the previous night.

"I decided to have a double espresso to perk me up," she said. "It did the trick so I had one after another and they seemed to be working. I felt great - as if I could take on the world."

By noon she was feeling unwell and crying and laughing uncontrollably in front of bewildered customers.

Miss Willis said: "My nerves were jangling. Tears were streaming down my face. People kept asking me if I was all right."

Her father sent her home but by the following morning she could not feel her lips and was struggling to breathe.

Miss Willis, from Stanley, County Durham, spent several hours under observation at the University Hospital of North Durham, where the caffeine overdose was diagnosed.

She said: "I was drenched and burning up and hyperventilating.

"I was having palpitations, my heart was beating so fast. I think I was going into shock".

Miss Willis is due to start her Alevels at college next month, studying law, psychology, sociology and accountancy.

She said last night: "Coffee is fine in moderation and really does pick you up, but I just overdid it. I didn't realise what could happen, so I hope other people learn from my mistake."

"I felt exhausted for days afterwards and I can't even bear the sight of coffee now".

Her father said: "Jasmine was just helping out in her holidays and had started on the 8am shift.

"She doesn't usually drink coffee at all, not even instant. But I've just had a beautiful new coffee machine installed so she thought she'd try an espresso."

The Department of Health advises people not to drink more than five single espressos or four cups of instant coffee a day.

Earlier this year scientists questioned the validity of the traditional view that caffeine can reduce the effects of tiredness and increase alertness.

The Bristol University team found that the levels of alertness among those who drank coffee were almost the same as those who had drunk none.

Coffee has been found to have some health benefits, however, Studies have suggested it can protect against the onset of Parkinson's disease and keep the mind sharp into old age.

Tea and coffee also contain a wealth of other health-boosting compounds.

A spokesman for the British Coffee Association said: "There are thousands of published studies which demonstrate clearly that moderate coffee drinking - four to five cups a day - is perfectly safe.

"Increasingly, there is evidence to suggest that there are health benefits from it. The key to any healthy, balanced diet is moderation in all things and this applies to coffee."

This is a perfect example that shows how ignorance is the main ingredient in drug overdose.
Especially with a dangerous drug like caffeine that should be regulated and controlled. The same thing happened to me with cigarettes the first time I smoked. I bought a pack- smoked it- threw up. I was all like "What the fuck happened?"

Lol. Yeah, I'd need a fuckload of drugs too after getting only 5 hours' sleep!!!!!111!!1 8o

^^^^ Aha. So it wasn't caffeine, it was oversleeping.

So be warned, kiddies, lest your masters put sleep into Schedule I.

lol...
i overuse caffeine once without tolerance.. since i was running on 1 hour of sleep. & had a wedding to go to.
i learned not to do that anymore after having same symptoms and having to use the toliet all day. ahhaha.

lol got a bottle of 200mg caffeine pills at work. They are a life saver with a can of redbull after a night with no sleep.

Coffee puts me to sleep :p May be due to the fact that I've been drinking it since I was 8 or so.

but certainly not cannabis, or any other illegal drug. in fact, 7 double-packed bongloads probably would have killed her instantly.
