LA PLATA COUNTY, Colo. — The medical examiner for La Plata County says five-year-old Kimber Michelle Brown died of an accidental overdose.

Officials say Brown had nearly two-and-a-half times the limit of an over-the-counter drug commonly used to treat cough.

(...)

The death is being called an accident.

Sad story, but it got me wondering...

How come the parents don't lead a public cry to get the cough medicine banned?

(Answer: because the cough medicine makes money for a big company.)

and we'll never read an article that says someone ingested an overdose level amount of marijuana because there is no such thing!

The government is so antiquated. More and more people are realizing that the war on cannabis is fucking bullshit. So it is harder to tell people why a lot of drugs should be legalized IME but with weed, even friends of mine that don't smoke, maybe just had it under a half dozen times with no inclination to smoke again think it should be legal and I think that's pretty fucking cool.

^I guarantee you there's a group of parents somewhere in the US that wants to do just that.

No doubt you are right.
I knew someone in who had lived in the mountains of N California in a very small town with relatively many people who tried to get Halloween banned as an anti-Christian holiday.
And Wikipedia's list of challenged books in the U.S. in the 1990s alone gives a clue as well.
There are people who are so closed-minded, and yet we all have to share this world, in peace, somehow, if we can.
We think "If they would just allow me my own freedom and keep to themselves"
while they think "if they could just stop doing SUCH terrible things".
We cannot understand their logic.

They cannot understand ours, either. I think it is because they believe
"we must protect society from these evils"
and
they define themselves as part of the larger society, with a right to impose their opinions on us in ways that clearly affect our true freedoms.

If we were given our intrinsic freedoms as human beings,
including the freedom to alter our own consciousness,
what emerged as a "society" would be the only truly democratic society.

I got an oz of headies and made brownies and ate a quarter of them. It wasn't lethal, but I'd say 4 hours of coming up intensely, 8 hours of extreme highness (I think I hit like the ultimate baked plateau where I just straight up OD'd and got sick!)

wasn't lethal or anything, but definitely fits the term "over dose" haha

it's not like i almost died or anything lol. pretty harmless. I just ingested an amount of cannibinoids that was higher than my body could tolerate comfortably lol.

I just remember getting more and more baked and I was like "holy shit, I'm getting more stoned?" once i got to a certain point. then it got uncomfortable to the point I'd call it an OD lol vomiting, dizziness etc...

I agree about the fact that more and more people are supportive or at least tolerant of weed.
I wish it were true for all consciousness - altering substances.

I thought that, by definition, an overdose was accidental?

What was it? DXM?

more than likely, she died from sloppy journalism.

Here's a theorem: No OTC medicine has a therapeutic index of 2.5, even in toddlers. Unless there's a serious allergy (in which case, do we call that an overdose?).

Reporters will uncritically parrot anything police tell them.

I think even the most dangerous drugs like barbiturates have a higher TI, I'm trying to major in veterinary medicine currently and when you put animals (and 99.99% likely humans) to sleep sometimes it takes a whole bottle of pentobarbital and they're knocked out by half a syringe full, which is about 1/20th of a bottle. I can't really think of any drug that would have that low of an index. I'm sure you or someone else can. Remember, the point of this drug is to kill something, and it has a higher therapeutic index than that magical drug that can't be named in the article.

Also are you taking numbers off of your name every few weeks or are there several mods with just numbers for a name? lol

^that's actually a good article from the DM. She had 2.5 times the adult level; I wonder how that translates to a child.

Can't find any case reports of children dying from DXM. Maybe this is a freak occurrence? Hundreds of millions of parents give DXM to their kids.

Just once. The forum was clogged with my 18-character handle appearing everywhere. It's neater this way.

there's also the possibility that she was a poor metabolizer; that would throw off the DXM to DXO ratio

wiki:

A major metabolic catalyst involved is the cytochrome P450 enzyme known as 2D6, or CYP2D6. A significant portion of the population has a functional deficiency in this enzyme and are known as poor CYP2D6 metabolizers. O-demethylation of DXM to DXO contributes to 100% of the DXO formed during DXM metabolism.[35] As CYP2D6 is a major metabolic pathway in the inactivation of dextromethorphan, the duration of action and effects of dextromethorphan can be increased by as much as three times in such poor metabolizers.[36] In one study on 252 Americans, 84.3% were found to be "fast" (extensive) metabolizers, 6.8% to be "intermediate" metabolizers, and 8.8% were "slow" metabolizers of DXM.[37]

So a person who is a poor metabolizer would show abnormally high levels of DXM even if dosing instructions were followed.

I know it's grim but what did she likely die from? Liver failure? From the DXM? Ceterizine? Both?

I wish articles like this would include all this information. Currently that article can't even prevent this happening again because of how void it is of details.

Sad story..at least it was something OTC at first I jumped the gun a assumed it would be something illegal that the idiotic parents left out..but still it's all bad sad situation.
