Hey Stee, the worst thing about wasps is the public misconception. They are beautiful creatures with a highly complex social structure. They are extremely important pollinators (second only to honey bees) and removers of many garden pest insects. I hate having to kill them. While I know you make what to me is a self - evident truth on a meta level, with respect to the fact that the wasps lives are as valuable as any (WLM!!!), even before you get to their importance in keeping the ecosystem ticking over but with regards for actual food for thought I have only just started to imagine how much fascination and respect someone would develop for what are unique, complex and niche examples of life and the power that is wielded through it when working with all of these animals for so long.

Apologies for the poncy answer but this afternoon has been made very pleasant thanks to the wonders of chemistry and certain flora and as such I had a bit of a moment conceptualising your reply <3

I'm actually seriously considering changing careers because of my respect for the creatures I'm forced to kill.

I'm fuckin sick of people whinging about wildlife just because they dont like it...

I respect the importance and professionalism the job requires and I know it has to be done but even with the irrational hatred and the wasp torture porn it would be a non starter with respect to the rodents. I know they have to be dealt with but I have never kept pets (I have spent my life borrowing others, babysitting dogs when folks go on holiday and stuff like that) with one, very important exception - a beautiful white and brown fancy rat, my little girl, Bert (dont ask about the name). She was so clever she only needed the cage to sleep in, having the run of the house whenever someone was at home. Being the selfish prick that I am, my heartbreak when having to put her to sleep after she developed a tumour at 3 & 1/2 was vile enough to prevent me from ever getting another animal.

It is depressing how cavalier some cunts are about their perceived animal 'infestations' - I expect the notion that it is an actual living thing just trying to get on that is providing the obstacle does not even occur to these people.

from the little I know of you from reading previous posts a pet-commitment sounds like it could be therapeutic for you - a dog perhaps?

I think you are spot on sir, its not the first time that thought has crossed my mind it is just I am just so far down the hole at the moment that I would need a couple of months to get into what needs to be at least a half decent routine. It goes without saying that the therapeutic benefit will be partially due to the amount of real responsibility I would be taking on but with me due to have my first appointment at my DSP since Feb. 2020 in just under two weeks I have at least reached a minor crossroads where I should have the possibility to prove that to myself from the beginning of next week onwards ...

My philosophy on life is 'live and let live'. Unfortunately some species need to be controlled - such as rats that can carry significant diseases.

But the public perception of them far outweighs their actual threat.

It's amazing how many big burly blokes run like little schoolgirls just because someone has sen a rat. They need to survive, but they also need to be controlled.

The problem is that customers increasingly expect pest eradication rather than control - which is the best we can offer.

am hearing you man, but also if you got the dog then the scenario would force you into some kinda routine etc, thus avoiding potentially xxx months/years further procrastination...

...as you know, the 'right time' often never arrives re any number of different issues, and sometimes we just have to take a leap of faith

if you were to get a canine companion what kinda mutt would appeal?

U 2 m8 with regards to the old procrastination - while I have got my shit together again once I have been ultra ungrateful with respect to how little effort I have entertained in putting valuable time to use, to the extent that despite my extended isolation I have still had some of the best moments of my life due to one childhood constant I have maintained since regardless of my personal circumstances - a love of cinema that while varied in nature still finds itself centred around tentpole, top of the pops style fantasy and science fiction driven concepts that I feel just as giddy and immersed in at 42 as I was at 5 when I saw the first new release I was both aware was coming ahead of its release due to the media coverage and when it finally hit home video for rental, my dad managed to grab it as soon as it became available (as we used Beetamax, the rental shop usually only had one copy which could take weeks to get hold of) with it being the first live action film I remember being able to follow, both shitting myself with fear and being blown away with delight due to the film living up to the fuss the media and the pop charts had made. The film was Ghostbusters and with my growing awareness that my segue does not require the expansion I have already tortured with I will take up this point at another time. (I had a pipe before posting, sorry).

So while I am a textbook example of tomorrow never arriving I do genuinely have a moment coming up with short term motivations to keep it locked down, something which I may very well be able to keep up long enough to start a routine that a dog would expand on, solidify and make it worthwhile. With regards to the flavour of the dog I do not know much about breeds beyond the basics - I love Labradors but they do get moderately hench and could be a tight situation. Ultimately though, if I did go for it fate would have as much say as I would as for reasons I hope are self explanatory I would consider nothing other than a rescue dog. And I don't mean one of those clever fuckers that have high vis coats on and can fly helicopters up Crib Goch in the fog to fish another poor sod off the side of the cliff.

Mosquitoes are my pet hate. Do you have any tips to be rid of them? I try not to keep standing water around. I've spent many a summer night running around my bedroom with a shoe in my hand trying to squish the little fuckers

Pets can be so therapeutic when you're lonely. Alas I rent, so not allowed to keep cats or dogs. I could get a hamster. Or I've always fancied having a tortoise... 🤔

Yes, that's one of the many anticoagulant rodenticides in our armoury - and the best in my opinion. But it's strong shit so its use is highly regulated.

An interesting one is alphachloralose which is a sedative related to chloral hydrate - the stuff that killed Anna Nicole Smith.

well i've rented for decades and still managed to have plenty dogs/cats etc :)

anyway Stee lives with his folks iirc so should be good to go mebbe
 
i rent but am allowed my cats and even have a catflap.

but when i had to find a place quick in norwich cos it became unsafe to stay where i was, i considered giving my older cat up as i could hardly find anywhere. ended up in a complete shithole and she was so depressed there (yes cats really do get depressed!) i questioned whether i'd made the right decision. i'm so glad now that i kept her.
