I went to a Scottish Claymores game when I was a boy with my dad, he got free tickets somehow, I remember being bored out my nut.
i'm not going to waste your time with trite platitudes, bcf but i've been in dark places in the past 10 or 15 years and just telling people here what's going on and knowing that people here - people i didn't even know - could relate, helped enormously.

I just don't understand American football at all. It does look like the sort of sport I might like if I could get my head around the rules though (not that understanding the rules is a prerequisite to enjoying something though)..

American sport in general is a bit meh in my opinion. Basketball is the one I'd probably follow, plus it's a damn fun sport to play.

you can learn the basic idea of the game in about 20 seconds: the team playing offense gets four "downs" (i.e. plays) to advance the ball 10 yards. they can do that by passing (throwing the ball) or rushing (running with the ball). if they do it, they get to start again (at "first down") until they score or until the team playing defense stops them advancing 10 yards. the other team then gets the ball and it's their turn.I just don't understand American football at all. well, that's not it because there are hundreds of subtleties and thousands of rules (the official nfl rule book is 86 pages long) but the above is all you need to know to have a basic idea of what they're up to. learning the complexities of the game was a fun process for me.
a friend of mine (another ex pat scot) and i used to get high and watch nfl games. at times i felt i had an insight to the game that was supersensory. buti was just stoned. during one game we were both high as kites and he turned to me and said "are we watching because they're playing or are they playing because we're watching?" and my fragile, pot-addled mind broke
