I don't believe we do, Wibble! I tried to see if I could wait in a doctors in the town I work but I was finishing at 2 so it was suggested I return to my town to get looked at if I was waiting ages. Area manager wanted to send me 20 miles the opposite direction! But I had my return ticket so it made more sense then paying for more trains.

and I am glad I went as I need to have a tetanus injection which they wouldn't give me because I asked was there side effects as I would be alone when I left and they said no but what's your health like? And I was honest that I've been pretty naseous and faint recently (wish I hadn't bothered) so they want me to go to wait. Rang the doc tho and explained I didn't feel I was that sick, and I need to have it done as I am working over 30+ hours a week. He's gonna see me tomorrow, and if he's satisfied with everything he'll administrate it then and I'll go up to work after. I suppose I am missing some hours but it needs done.

Work has been surprisingly productive given how scattered I felt this morning, I've completed a desk move which is no small task given the amount of 'stuff' I seem to accumulate. I'm not sure at what point I started needing 3 laptops and two 22" monitors, had to install it all myself as desktops just do not understand the meaning of organised cabling.

I guess I should actually do some work or I may just begger about with this Kali-Linux thing all afternoon :D
 
Allein, do you know your hardware? I can't imagine it being too difficult, but are usb ports easy to replace on a motherboard. Ive got a proper old PC to get the ports from, but my Gaming rig/Beast has two fucked ports. Do they click in, or soldering involved? My PC has more fucking USB 3.0 ports that 2.0. Fucking annoying.

I wouldnt even consider trying to solder in new connectors. If you have one port that works just get a USB hub, in theory you can daisy chain 255 devices off one connector, it doesnt effect performance given it is supposed to be serial.

Failing that you should have a spare PCI slot (white edge connector on the montherboard) just buy a USB card plug it in and it should recognise it on reboot.

right not to sure if the is some dodgy speed doing the rounds in north Yorkshire at the minute to well versed phet heads o.d. last night on less than a gram of the stuff ambulances came and took both to hospital thing is i had a little taster myself and it did nothing to me but that bloody rc for you fucked up my tolerances

Cheers man. PCI, slot seems a good idea, nice and tidy. Don't the power drop off if you daisy chain? Like the USB ports arn't as powerful in the case, as they are if connected directly to the motherboard? Yeal Ill PM you, if stuck.

This is you're concerned about power, it depends on what you connect to it. I have a powered one to charge and connect tablets and phones to but I carry a non powered on in my laptop bag, max current draw through a single USB is 500mA, keybaords, mice and drives with their own power supply draw little but things like drives that just have a USB or phones pull more and a powered hub is required.

If you still have one good USB go for the hub it will be easier, if not you'll almost certainly have to fit a card, I have seen some desktops where the USB connectors arent soldered to the board but connected by flying leads but you'd be lucky to find identical ones to replace them with. Maplins sell both the hubs and the cards although fleabay may prove cheaper.

Removing and replacing components on PCBs isnt something to be taken lighly, I spent years learning how to rework PCBs ....then it all went surface mount ! the boards are multi-layered meaning there are tracks (connections) on both sides as well as layered into the board, best left alone given the other options.
 
they use high temp solder a lot of the time aswell so you can easily wreck the pcb by overheating trying to use a soldering iron designed for much lower melting point solder.
 
With an old e-Machines thats not been used since it broke on purchase. I never knew how they were connected on to the motherboard, ie non soldered slot in and away you go. Kinda assumed they just slotted in to the motherboard. If thats not always the case then fuck even bothering, seeing. Powered hub seems good, but it being external will piss me off. Straight into the PCI, is the way to go by the looks of it. Cheap as fuck, just had a look. I am right in thinking that USB 2.0 is not cross compatible with usb 3.0?
 
I was only going on that premise as every device I put in USB 3.0 dont fucking work. Anything from a digital to analogue converter, to a gaming headset to a mouse. I know they fit in the socket, but are they the same, hardware wise in terms of pins and cabling?

Edit-I thought not being backward compatible was weird. Its only the case USB 3 ports on the case that don't work. Which is easy to sort. (He says)

have you checked the bios settings for the usb bus, you can make them run in usb 2 mode afaik

I'm sure this is the case, a USB3 device will just run at USB2 speed, if you have the device manager open when you plug a device in you should see it add itself even of it fails.

I have seen USB connectors wear out, the contact areas can just wear away but only after heavy use i.e. old laptops with only a couple of ports.

If you have a smart phone and USB cable try that, at the least you would know the port had power, with the BIOS I;d just try selecting 'load default values'

Hmmm, does that device and any child devices attached to it e.g. 'USB root hub' look OK, in properties do they say they are working ? I wonder if they require the specific chip set drivers for that motherboard, did you get a disk with the machine ? have you loaded Windows yourself or did the machine come preinstalled ? The Windows disk doesnt always have all the required drivers, this is almost always the case for laptops but can happen with desktop units.

It would be worth right clicking ll the USB devices and installing them, then reboot and they should reinstall, worth a shot but I'm starting to think you don't have the correct chipset drivers,
None of the devices should have a yellow triangle or show stuff like 'code 32' in properties, I have my doubts a BIOS setting is at fault of they are on board ports. Cjeck and let me know if it all seems installed and also see if you can identify the exact motherboard make and model from the BIOS.

Registry shenanigans may be required but lets try not to go there.
