It's a US thing.
Alcohol proof is a measure of how much alcohol (ethanol) is contained in an alcoholic beverage. The term was originally used in the United Kingdom and was defined as 7/4 times the alcohol by volume (ABV). The UK now uses the ABV standard instead of alcohol proof. In the United States, alcoholic proof is defined as twice the percentage of ABV. The measurement of alcohol content and the statement of this content on the bottle labels of distilled beverages (also called liquors or spirits) is regulated by law in the United States. The purpose of the regulation is to provide pertinent information to the consumer.

It's a fucking stupid thing. Why take the actual alcohol content then double it for no reason? By the sounds of that it's the standard measurement for booze in America, so folk would be shouting they're drinking 150% alcohol - NO YOU'RE FUCKING NOT! Stupid Americans.

We were drinking shots of it. It was absolutely disgusting. It did burn a bit but not too bad. It was horrible though, not a chance will I ever drink it again. I've got no idea how much it cost, I didn't pay for it.

Typo aside, it's a damn random number to me too. 7/4 times the APV is random too. While it's true that I judge the strength of booze on context relative to other booze, why not use a number that had a basis in reality?

Nice!! would love to get a semi acoustic. was thinking about getting a 12 string awhile back. how long have you been playing? got any vids? hardly know any guitar players these days and the band situation around here is shite, hardly draws a decent crowd

This my thoughts, I couldn't see any good reason for why they did it in that wiki quote, except it used to be 7/4, but now they use double as it's less confusing..

so they work out the percentage, then double it? Stupid cunts.

There's a history behind it though, they didn't just come out with it, and it's not percent proof, it's degrees.
 
same here, suspiciously when i tried to go to ED. (to yarn on about quad dropping snowballs and still being able to piss like a racehorse)
