Morning all! I'm still in hospital :( op went fine, just have a lot of activity in my new plumbing! Could take a couple of weeks to settle down. I think if my surgeon was in he'd let me go but the junior doctors over the weekend are a bit more cautious. I think I'll be allowed home tomorrow, but you never know I could get lucky and get out today. Hopefully all done though now, after 12 months, 3 surgeries totalling over 10 hours in theatre and 8 weeks of inedible hospital food.
 
Longest I've been in hospital was last year's foot operation, only three nights but I didn't eat any of the food it was all disgusting, looked OK on paper but visually and olfactorially took me straight back to the worst of school meals (1980s school meals, the ones that smell of the janitor's sweaty ballsack, a smell that permeates and lingers constantly in the canteen and adjoining areas).

So have you got a diagram of your plumbing RJ? Did you post one before? Always good to get a visual impression of these things :) You've been through the wringer with this.

This is a diagram of where I was after the second op, all that's changed this time is close up the ileostomy and poke it back in.

First op was removal of the colon and an end ileostomy (ileum pulled through the abdo wall to form a stoma). My rectum was left in and the "loose" end also sewn to the abdo all, giving me a fistula for mucous to pass through. Most of the rectum was then removed in the second op leaving just enough to attach the pipe.

Yeah hospital food is dire (the only fault I have with this place), I'm on a really restricted diet too so I end up with only one barely appropriate option for each meal. Can't really eat fibre yet and need to eat soft foods, so I'm on pasta and potatoes basically. Had a cottage pie yesterday (picked out the veg like a fussy child), the mash was so dry and hard it was like a house brick. Even the toast for breakfast is like rubber. It can't be helping my bowels sort themselves out! I don't understand why we don't get special menus on this ward, we're all in the same situation pretty much.
 
yeah it's pretty mad that people getting digestive tract treatment get terrible food! It should be part of the care to have good meals. It has a huge effect on your mood too if you're not enjoying such a basic function as eating. What can I say. Cutting cost comes before care :( Thank fuck you'll be out soon. Will you be on a restricted diet for long? Are you looking forward to that shit? I don't suppose it'll be a properly formed stool, but I was thinking yesterday how great it is to have a shit, it's so fundamental to our existence, we're basically guts with limbs and brains attached :D

and thanks, diagram makes it clear. does the pouch perform the function of your mostly-missing rectum?
 
Yes, in the sense that it acts as a final stage waiting area for the shit, but you're right, it'll never be properly formed again. The best I can hope for is a porridge like consistency. At the moment it's just water though heh. About every 2 hours. I've done a few farts on the loo for the first time in 12 months too, they were satisfying. I doubt I'll ever be able to confidently fart without a toilet beneath me again though.

I'll be out sooner than I thought, just been discharged!
 
Good stuff, congrats on getting discharged :D Hospitals are no fun when you're recovering from something. Or, indeed, at all.
 
Yeah I can tell when I've got well enough to go home because I start finding it incredibly tedious in here. When you first come out of surgery it's not such a big deal.
 
Order came through in record time, was there Friday so I got smashed on mxe, in my zombie state I did something with it which I can't remember & lost it. Spent several hours when sober ripping the flat apart looking for it but it's gone :(
Very sad atm, I love that stuff & it's gone.

Guess "God" will give it me in the next life alongside the flay keys, money, shoes, clothes, earphones i've also lost in the past while on dissociative chem's.
