Last time I attended a rave (yeah, I know) some pilled-up guy was concerned about my hands getting cold on the way back to an after-party. He handed me his black leather gloves.

I spent the rest of the night wearing only one of them and giving the Black Panther salute to all and sundry.

death rates when gloves were introduced from bareknuckle boxing actually shot up. the theory being, with bare fists you would break your knuckles before you could do much lasting damage to someones brain whereas gloves enable you to keep pounding heads long enough to leave them brain damaged

^ Very true.

Gloves primarily protect the knuckles of the person punching, they reduce cuts too, but they basically just allow you to punch harder without breaking your hands.

MMA gloves are only 4oz (and only cover the knuckles) rather than 6oz, 8 oz, or 10oz that boxers use (so broken hands and faces are more common)

think that film also contains the 'im gonna chop off your arms, are you ready' line

Excellent film that. Both of 'em. One Armed Boxer is the first one, Master of Flying Guillotine was the sequel. Crops up on quite a few lists of films that were banned in the UK during the Video Naties era. Neither was ever on the official list of banned films but both are entertainingly violent. Shogun Assassin was the only chop-socky flick that actually made the official "Nasties" list. And is also a mucho-sampled corker of a fillum.
