Yeah it took me a while to get my head round it. It's been a while since I've been in a miners' club but I just remember a load of pissed up folk, mostly old men, sitting about talking shite.

That's not entirely uncommon. At least not as uncommon as you'd think. A pub would normally be too small though, normally sports halls etc. I could probably go & watch cage fighting at the weekend if I fancied it, I don't though.

The old social clubs tend to be bigger places with room for events, but in my day it was brass brand concerts, not MMA.

I didn't clock that it was a social club. Aye, if it's got a function room type thing then I'm not surprised there's a cage fight going down. Doesn't make it any less fucking insane though. The best of it is it'll probably have been perfectly legit, proper licenses & shit, not like a backyard brawl type number. The cunts that are allowing places like that to hold events like that must be total idiots.
I'm guessing that's like fight club. The next logical step from karaoke really. Get a bit pished & your mate sticks your name down to have a square go with some skinhead tank lol.
Whereas the event Knock was talking about would have been slightly more professional, with the fighters coming from gyms with their trainers etc, like the equivalent of a really amateur boxing match.
Gypsy fighting isn't MMA, that's straight up boxing. If you kicked someone in a gypsy fight you'd probably get lynched.
Aye all the working mens clubs and that I've been in are all the same, old boys in flat caps sitting around and looking suspiciously at you. Not that I frequent them but it's an unavoidable kinda thing when you grow up in the town I did.

Horrible business. I find boxing unpleasant enough without people kneeing each other in the face into the bargain. I guess 'white collar' means it's doctors and lawyers smashing each others' boats in for the delectation of the baying crowd.

Not a fan of the televised punching and kicking and whatnot myself but do own two pairs of boxing gloves me and my mate spar with sometimes, he spent a good five years or so kickboxing and has all the protective gear so it's pretty good fun. Need to get a bag really, set it up in the garage or summat. Fairly strong arms and back and whatnot on me, love the physicality of it but am in no hurry to get myself cabbaged.

about the rabbit, she's rubbing her chin on stuff which apparently indicates ownership as that's where their scent glands are. I pointed out to my mate how funny it is that she marks stupid stuff like the bottom of my desk and chest of drawers, til he pointed out it's probably her way of saying 'your TV and PC are mine, I just can't reach them. Yet.'.

Yet.'.MMA is just mixed martial arts, there's a decent amount of skill and training behind it. A lot of the pro MMA fighters have got black belts in all sorts (though some of them just come from an american wrestling/brawling background).
White collar just means unprofessional. There's white collar boxing clubs for folk that work 9-5 and just fancy doing the bare minimum amount of training to get have a bout. Far less restriction on weight and size between opponents.
White collar MMA I imagine is just a bar brawl in a ring.
Gypsy fighting tends just to be bare knuckle boxing.

Like jancrow, I fucking hate it all...I wouldn't even know if it goes on down here, i suppose it must...but this isn't the same as the old "bare-knuckle" fights that used to go on then, or is it basically a rebranded version of it?i saw a thing about gypsy fighting once and it was all about ears and noses being bitten off then someone saying "fair play boys" or something.

Confusing terminology, because white collar also means professional, as in desk job, as opposed to blue collar manual work. I suppose it means they're amateur fighters. Or are bin-men and posties not allowed to take part?

I looked to Wiki for clarification and was confused by this quote, apparently from the Wall Street Journal in 1923: "Movement from high schools to manual labor in steel plants is unusual, as boys formerly sought white collar work to the extent the diarrhoea got so bad they could no longer stand up."
