Gibberings CXCII - Limited Squirrel Bizniz

is he???

OH WOW, I just saw that! He was waving a red flag but he really didn't do much to deserve a temp ban. Sure he himself should know better but c'mon!

If you smoke dodgy tobacco, I wouldn't be surprised if it had got plastic in it.

As for β-blockers -- isn't the asthma relief drug salbutamol a β-agonist? It seems to me that under the wrong circumstances, beta blockers could bring on a really nasty asthma attack; and an inhaler might not be able to supply enough of the drug to restore normal breathing, in the presence of an antidote.

It would appear that's not thought to be the case after study :-

They're bronchoconstrictors and contraindicated in asthmatics. You didn't link the study itself but rather an article.

Here is the actual study:
http://www.atsjournals.org/doi/abs/10.1164/rccm.201212-2206OC
These are the conclusions of a peer review:
Nonetheless, the results of the study are disappointing from a therapeutic perspective. It can be argued that inhaled corticosteroids blunted the possible biological effects of β-blockade. However, if β-blockade is unable to improve outcomes in the setting of inhaled corticosteroid use, the prospects are considerably dimmed, considering the difficulty with titration and overcoming the additional bronchospasm, that this form of therapy will be a practical addition to our armamentarium. One can only hope that more selective inverse agonists might produce more encouraging results. One could also argue that perhaps this form of therapy might be more effective in patients not well controlled on inhaled corticosteroids. However, considering the initial bronchospastic effects, this may be a more difficult group to study. For now, in the case of β-blockers in asthma, what doesn’t kill you does not appear to make you stronger.
