Paseed out on my right hand the other day. It's been semi-paralysed since. NHS Direct says I should wait a few days and get a massage.

Massage, anybody? Pleeeease?

Thought not.

There is no such specific thing as an addictive personality. We are all creatures of habit with lives largely dictated by repetitive patterns of behaviour. Nobody has anything in their genes or physiology which makes them any more susceptible than anyone else. And yes, it's a cop-out usually, another way for people to deny responsibility for their actions.

People who are more susceptible are so through experience and environment, not their DNA.

Actually, I can tell you exactly what is wrong. I gouched out on my hand a few years ago and the same thing happened. Let me guess, you can't stop you wrist from dropping, you can't extend your fingers, you can make a fist but not hold any weight in it?

It's called 'radial nerve palsy' or 'saturday night palsy' for slang. Basically you have fallen asleep in a manner that has put pressure on the radial nerve and it's now not functioning. There's nothing the hospital can do that is going to make it better suddenly but you need to go and get yourself looked at.

The good news.....it will probably get better.
The bad news......it will probably take a long time (mine took going on three months before it even showed signs of improvement and it was close to six months before it was 100% again), and it might never.

Either way......gp/hospital for you m80, you won't get much other than a splint and an appointment for physical therapy but you should go.

It's called being a limp wristed nancy boy. NHS24 said "Man up".

Sorry...

Perhaps you're discounting the fact that certain illnesses with definite tendencies toward addiction and substance abuse (bipolar being one example) do appear to have an alarming tendency to recur in families.

The research is at an early stage, and involves multiple genes, so it's doubtful there's a single 'addictive personality gene'. It does hold hope for better understanding of a possible genetic basis for addiction in future, however.

Science never sleeps, SHM, much like rust.

EDIT: Shit, I thought it might be /saturday night palsy. Cheers O.

We'll agree to disagree. I believe there is. I'm living it. Every interest I've had since I was 3, has become an addiction / obsession. The psychological feelings I had towards codeine were the same as to the rest.

Although I don't agree with you I do respect your views.

Evey

Science advances one funeral at a time.

NSFW:
“A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it."

Sorry but you're wrong. Again.

I think Eve is talking about OCD which quite clearly is a thing. That's not what folk mean when they say "I have an addictive personality" though. They just mean I like to sniff all the drugs, eat all the chocolate, drink all the booze.

Not so much "I have an addictive personality" as "I have an obsessive personality".

Calling it an addictive personality is wrong. I like to sniff all the drugs and drink all the booze. So does everyone I've ever met (if you enjoy something, you want to do it again. Perfectly natural, not some mad personality trait). So, I guess if you really want to shout about addictive personalities then human beings all have an addictive personality. Therefore, there's no point even mentioning it, because it doesn't make you different from every single other person.

It's not a unique personality trait, it's called being a person.

Or what SHM said (extreme things like OCD, bipolar aside)

Of course, and if I had a family member with a mental illness or an addiction of any sort I would be much more careful around drugs. None of the people I know that say they have an 'addictive personality' have ever had an addiction. And I often see people on here (well not EADD specifically) saying they're addicted to heroin after trying it three times. If you're an addict after using it three times or even ten times then that's your choice. In fact these people were addicts before they even tried it.

Yeah OCD is certainly a thing that makes you more susceptible addiction.

How do you know?

Maybe in your very narrowly defined social circle everyone's obsessed with taking drugs and drinking booze all the time, but your indictment that this is some sort of fundamental part of the human condition is clearly bollocks. In fact, for most people they are a side issue to everything else in their life.

I'm just interested in everyone having such definitive views on the subject when really there's no solid evidence in either direction.

You realise how much that contradicts your point?

I agree, for the most part, with your actual point but I don't understand how that sentence fits in to it.

No, I don't mean they have addictive personalities that made addiction inevitable, I meant it as in they've accepted that they're going to become addicts before any sort of addiction has developed, psychological or physical.

Really?

Peer reviewed academic study please.

Or are we, as I suspect, like most other people in this thread just taking their own opinion and presenting it as fact?

Fucking hell this place has really gone downhill in some respects.
