Making the point that was being made to you perfectly. It's not the technical skill it's the overall effect that matters. Pretty Vacant was one of the first songs I ever learnt to play and actually played in front of people when asked to accompany an equally drunk friend who wanted to have a crack on open mic night. Think I'd been playing guitar about a fortnight at the time. Still sounded fairly decent if I do say so myself.

Im not a skilled guitarist myself but i can notice a massive difference in guitar skill level between GG Allin and Bob Dylan. The former didnt display much on that particular track, and the latter is clearly outstandingly gifted imo on so many of his studio recordings. So much so, that they still sound great 50 years after he recorded them. I've not heard any of his demos or bootlegs or other less polished performances where he may sound as hamfisted on the guitar as GG Allin does, for all i know. Here's a less studio polished performance, but even so he has far better rhythym to his guitaring.

I'm not meaning to sound as if im dismissing GG based on listening to one track, that wouldnt be fair. Its not really fair comparing the two performers, there isnt really any comparison as they are just completelly not the same thing at all. As you can probably tell im struggling to find my point and make it properly. It may be absurd, but if im going to listen to acoustic music it has to be skilled, thats the whole point of it for me, because it is music that is totally stripped down to the bare bones. The heavy metal twaddlers at their 200 mph stuff does nothing for me, even though they may be technically brilliant. I'm a bit confused about all this now and unable to get the right words together 8(

yeah i admit that my position is a bit 'tenuous' and unclear, but punk rock is a completely different thing to acoustic music, which has traditionally and historically been mainly about the skills of the performer in general. There will allways be exceptions, and GG Allin appears to be one of them, that guy is clearly not aiming for mass appreciation and consumption. I have no problem with that, lots of the stuff John Peel used to play was pretty low on technical skill and polish, but that was besides the point for him, his main goal was to allways to try to find something that sounded new and original.

I don't think you understand what 'punk' means, beyond the narrowest, most rigid definition.

Ninja edit. You said he wasn't technically proficient but he is a extremely talented guitarist & is most certainly the best creatively speaking for his time.

You are right in what you say there though. There is a lot more to being the best guitarist ever than being able to play The Flight of the Bumble Bee at 320bpm on a guitar....

Tsk, Dream Theater pits are tame... other bands not so much (but for me it usually depends on how tall/sturdy the fans are as I'm fairly little). Am not a huge DT fan but an ex used to be so I've been dragged to quite a few gigs in the past. Though it's not really about punching, more gentle shoving.. moshpits are very friendly really.

If it's your first metal fest you'll kick yourself for not buying a weekend ticket, though. :)

I'm very particular about what metal I like... so I think just having a day ticket is the best. Will still give me a chance to discover some new bands. A bit expensive to pay for the whole weekend too unless I'm ubre keen.

I'm hopefully going to hang around London for the week after, meet up with some friends who live there & have a night or two out there before heading back up North.
 
Ah, fair enough. It is an expensive festival, yeah - am also very particular but there's a decent number of bands that I like playing. Plus it's also about the experience and random chatting with people for me, so is worth it.
 
Yeah, some NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal - post-punk era) bands have a Punk feel to them for that reason. People were bored of the Punk style but they kept the attitude.
 
Shane McGowan may not be the most technically proficient singer in the world - and he sings what could perhaps be broadly thought of as traditional Irish music in terms of style - but he is punk through and through.
