I do admit, and hope I don't offend anyone with this, that because most here are British I actually forget that people come here from other parts of Europe - even though it is called EADD.

The hypocrisy of a lot of British people is unbelievable really.

Brits emigrate all over the world which is quite alright, apparently, however if anyone comes to our country they're vilified and treated as scum... Bizzare..!

Really?

You think a slur like nigger that carries with it a history of oppression and connotations of slavery, abuse and degredation is the same as a slur like white-trash that carries no historical significance?

If someone called me white-trash it doesn't brinng to mind anything other than the fact someone is trying to be hateful towards me, if I was black and someone called me nigger it would immediately bring to mind to the situation out of which that word was born, slavery.

It's not just my perception, it's an absolute fact.

White people have not had centuries of oppression with the oppressors referring to them as white trash. They haven't had white trash go home sprayed on walls in their community. Just pause and think about it for a second. It is in no way the same thing.

Not everyone is aware of where "nigger ," comes from but know it to be a racial name.

So in that context nigger n white trash are the same. Both racial insults. Try not to assume that everyone has access to the information that you do.

It depends how you are trying to quantify equivalence, on a personal level one is clearly way more offensive than the other. On a legal level they are probably considered equivalent, a racial term is a racial term.

It's referred to as reclaimed language and to be fair I believe Owen is white and so are you so neither are in a position to even start to comment.

Personally I've never had someone call me 'white trash' or even heard anyone being called that. In the UK both black and Asian people, along with other ethnic groups (Irish springs to mind) have suffered institutionalised racism, white residents haven't.

I don't feel guilt over the transgressions of the past, look far enough back and enough detail and you'll find the same things in all cultures what is shameful is to perpetuate this kind of ignorant hatred through the sloppy use of the language.

I would never knowingly be racist and know that I'm not (well as much anyone can say- it's been argued that we all have some inbuilt racism which could be just making judgements based on appearance. Almost in the same way many would look at how someone is dressed and label them a chav)
Anyway I've went beyond waffling here and not sure that post even made sense.


To make things simple I just try not to be rude or offensive to anyone (doesn't matter on religion, sex, race, age). Can't we all just get along :)

That makes no sense. The only way to move forward and cut this sort of shit out from society is through intergrated debate between all races with the common objective of racial harmony.
