Gibberings CLXIV - I don't Have a Clue if These Numerals are Right I'm Still Drunk

He's also probably done more in the way of pushing this country towards faith-based 12 Step abstinence programmes than almost anyone else not directly involved in the field as a profession.

Fix'd. I actually have a lotta time for Russel Brand - I wouldn't say I agree with all he says by any means but he does speak a lotta sense on a lotta issues. He also talks a lotta crap on a lotta issues. The latter doesn't prevent me from appreciating the former though - we all speak a lotta crap on a lotta issues. I do have a bit of an issue with his heavy promotion of faith-based approaches to addiction as being the only viable option though. I think he's pulled back a bit from the "only viable option" bit but that certainly wasn't the impression he gave out for quite some time. I do realise it's not his fault that politicians inexplicably decided he was the Voice of the Youth for a while and seemed to just presume he spoke for all young people (politicians can sometimes have an oddly broad idea of what constitutes "young people" - Russell Brand is more or less my age isn't he?) or perhaps that he spoke for all addicts.

However inexplicable and bizarre that assumption may have been it did furnish him with a golden opportunity to truly put addiction issues on the map and make the case for true HR and a variety of addiction treatment options. Instead he swathed himself in crucifixes and said god did it and that's all addicts need. I may be paraphrasing him slightly but he is somewhat verbose (this is a Good Thing) so it seems quite valid to do so. He had a real opportunity to bring drug, HR and addiction issues to the forefront of political and media (and by extension national) discussion and debate and he squandered it championing a failed approach. Yes 12 Step worked for him and works for plenty others but for the vast majority it doesn't work, has never worked, can never work. The wasted chance irked me immensely. I am still rather fond of him in general though.

Yeah I've got to admit he went too far in the direction of full abstinence based recovery, and although he didn't directly mention 12-step iirc I felt he could have been slightly more objective.

Still, the general thrust of what he was saying, that drug addicts shouldn't be ostracised by society and that prohibition doesn't work were both good messages.

edit: I don't remember him mentioning god in his address to the parliamentry select commitee? Maybe he did, I'll have to re watch it when I'm not quite so busy.

I don't actually recall if he specifically mentioned any deities in that select committee thingy either but 12 Step is a faith-based set-up so is there by implication even if not made explicit.

I don't remember him mentioning 12 step recovery either, only pushing abstinence based recovery.
