They might have had a best pair of clogs or a pair of night or 'neet' clogs as they say round here, which were fancy pattern clogs.

Clog fighting, locally called 'purring' was a means of settling disputes. Both the fighting and the betting among spectators was illegal.

"It is all up and down fighting here. They fought quite naked, excepting their clogs. When one has the other down on the ground he first endeavours to choke him by squeezing his throat, then he kicks him on the head with his clogs. Sometimes they are very severely injured."

And we think we live in fucked up times?

Still, I suppose it's reassuring that it's always been illegal to strip down to yer 'neet clogs' and kick the shit out of somebody. Although consenting adults should obviously be the exception.

That'll be the much-missed TheKid. He's not posted in ages now. Think his high-flying, tax-dodging, capitalist pigdogish career trumped his BL postings. Yes they do all <3 their coke, but yes it can also get the poor souls in the shit with their clients. Fukkin disgusting that a man's druglife can be put into enforced silence and secrecy just cos some hypocritical wankers kick up a fuss. Kid was one of my alltime fave EADDers despite his pigdog status :(

Aye, sucks indeed. :(

There's another funny Brisith contribution to the language: wanker :D

The rarely sighted PepperSocks? Egad!

Aye, Canadian here so kind of distant but I like my euro roots and culture. Long hiatus from BL but glad to be back. :)

Good night lads, just finished my herbal tea, will pop 191mgs of Diphenidine for bed time, hopefully it'll chill me for a few hours in dark and quiet, I have pyrazolam for sleep laters.

Good night, I had 160mgs of MXP today, but in two doses spread around the day, last one was a few hours ago, so I don't think the interaction should be too strong.

I've got clogs with built in computers.
Clever clogs.

It's pretty damn funny hearing North Americans saying "wanker!" without realising that it's actually quite rude. Anyway, good to seez ya, PeppaSokz.

Ya, to us it just sounds like funny casual/joking insult. One disparaging use that sticks out in my mind is Renton's; "they're just wankers. We on the other hand were colonized by wankers!"

Good to see ya too babylonboy :)

You won't know me as babylonboy, maybe as Vader or Yerg. Yeah, it's pretty funny calling a Californian a wanker to their face and them giggling, thinking it's just a mild slight, when actually, it's closer to "dickhead" or "arsehole".

That makes more sense Vader! ;) I was wondering; this guy knows me, and is glad to see me; it'd be really rude to not reciprocate.

Even "dickhead" is on the mild-ish side. "arsehole" definitely is jokingly mild. "ASS-hole" is more of a real attack; peaking with "Fucking Ass-hole"

I was actually considering the hierarchy of insults earlier oddly enough. It occurs to me that 'wanker' is mid-range ay best. Far worse (to my mind at least) is 'tosser' which has the same literal meaning but - when used as slight - has the added implication of dismissiveness. A wanker carries no such demeaning suggestion. I'd much rather be called a wanker than a tosser. Discuss.

Hmm.. where does "cunt" come in your insult hierarchy? At the top?

I was thinking of that one. To call a woman a cunt is definitely at the very top. It's the equivalent to the male "fucking ass-hole". Definitely a four letter word not used lightly.

The average bloke over here hasn't even heard "tosser". To me it has the element of demeaning suggestion, on a mid-range level, but not jokingly. Wanker is pure jokes (to us that is)

I'm pretty sure they do a hierarchy of swear words for television. Cunt and twat's gotta be at the top, although personally I find it lacking without flaps at the end

SO, in NA, cunt is mostly used against women, like bitch. In the UK, I would never call a woman a cunt, really, only a man. It's the worst, sure. Except racial slurs. Which is interesting. Why is it worse to call a black man a "nigger" than a white woman a "bitch"?

Anyway, cunt runs the gamut from worst-word-you-can-say to term of endearment. Ask an Aussie.

Huh, I really didn't think "fucking asshole" was that bad an insult. Interesting!

Nah, twat's more on a par with wanker, in terms of offense. I think?

Huh, I'm always being called a cunt by male friends. Do I need to reassess friends? :sus:

I had this discussion with Karma & Delsyd ages ago. He was genuinely shocked that I used the word so freely and in relation to basically anyone whether I liked 'em or not. He told me that Karma would have his hide if he ever said "that word" which really suprised me. I had no idea it was such a big deal and - more to the point - so specifically used as a term of abuse towards women over yonder ponder. Just ain't like that here. 'Cunt' is often used as a term of affection here. And is generally used offensively towards men not women.

And on the 'tosser' thing, it's the dismissiveness that stings. It kinda suggests that you don't even warrant wankerdom which really is kinda demeaning. 'Prick' is in similar vein. Not a particularly nasty or offensive word which is why it stings so much when hurled with suitable venom.

Gotta say, swearing is one thing that us Brits do properly. The number of times I've had apparent vitriolic abuse hurled at me from Seps (can't recall enough Canuck insult occasions to compare) and been left giggling hysterically at how very badly those fellas do swearing is just plain silly. Do they just not get it at all? Merkins just can't swear properly. At least not abusively. Swearing in general, yes, swearing as abuse, definitely not.
