Ahh yeah! Wake Up is good. Very clean, not really rowdy, and huge rooms. It's also right above Side Bar, which you should definitely check out! It's still on Pitt Street, but right at the bottom, on the corner.

I used to run entertainments for Westend, so if you need any info regarding trips, nightly events, etc - Just send me a PM :)
 
Urbain can probably plug his stuff better than my memory serves me Pagey. All I can say is that I went to Australia by accident (had no intention or inclination to go but was kinda forced to by circumstance) and I loved the place from the second I stepped off the plane, a customs officer APOLOGIZED for sending his dog down the line of travellers and then someone gave me a transport day pass for free - at 8.30am.

Sydney is like London but where everything works. Absolutely loved the way they make use of all the waterways, the beaches are brilliant and there always seemed something to do, somewhere to go, something to see. There's a sign by the Opera House which says "Please walk on the grass". It's a city where things are made possible instead of being prohibited. I believe this even extends to growing dope plants.

You will have a great time.

The only downside is it makes London look cheap.
 
Other Australian cities are full of "do not do this" "do not do that" signs to an extent where its completely OTT and feels oppressive. The parks are completely littered with these annoying notices. When you get away from the cities though it seems there is no health and safety type nanny stateing.

For example, there's a 72 metre fire lookout tree you can climb up, the tallest fire lookout tree in the world, it's embedded with giant steel rods for use as a climbeable ladder. The notice just says "do not climb this tree if you suffer from vertigo or fear of heights". I'm sure that in the UK such a thing would be never be allowed by the health and safety brigade. I liked the Australian honest, no fuss, matter of fact notice about that tree. It treats people with respect and gives them credit for common sense and maturity. If the notice had said "IT IS FORBIDDEN TO CLIMB THIS TREE" i think it would be far less effective.

I didnt climb it as i do have vertigo and fear of heights, my sister and brother in law did though. Apparently he didnt do it on his first visit, but conquered his fears on his second visit and made the climb. They were both exhausted after it, and they are both extremely fit.

Oh that sounds incredible - that's made me really excited, thanks. I was wondering if the idea of Australians being so laid back was just a myth but doesn't sound like it. I'm ecstatic just at the idea of being walking distance from a few beaches and the Opera House!

I better have some clean whites today. Got in yesterday and the woman who runs the cloakroom had given out my last set because she didn't think I was in. (I never have two days off in a row usually so she assumed I was on holiday.) So I had nick someone else set and they were far too big and I was constantly pulled up me trousers while in the kitchen.

what cities r u thinking of visitiing?

i recommend melbourne if you like culture (good music and food)

sydney as an all round rich person and beautiful beaches (some annoying people i suppose)

adelaide (ultimate climate, ultimate people and pub culture and good underground pub music scene)

gold coast (ultimate place to go to beaches and reefs)

anywhere in tasmania (beautiful i hear)

probably best to do some questions in Australian Social Discussion but i could be totally off mark if your thinking of visiting best country in world
 
If Spade were here he'd tell stories of naked racism. And, from other things I've heard, I'm sure he'd be right. It's just I never encountered it myself, but I'm certainly not saying it doesn't exist. I only made NSW and Queensland and I know Queensland has a reputation for being hard man racism Central. But all we found was helpful people, people who offered service with a smile and went out of their way to do things for us like organising travel etc. Things you just can't imagine happening in the UK. When they said "Have a good day" it never sounded regurgitated from a training manual, rather that they really meant it.

If I'd seen or known that side of Australia when I was 21 I'd have emigrated in the blink of an eye. The climate has to help too.

not meaning to sound snobby but the 'general culture' seems to be around 30-40 years behind our own in terms of things like Racism and Sexism. A slap on a female bum gets no reaction, the Aboriginies seem to be very openly despised by all but the most Liberal of Australians. Not that i met that many 'natives' or stayed there that long, but that was the very strong impression i got about things like that.

you started it. :p I never 'deconstuct' Australian trees lol. :) That one would take one hell of a chain saw to deconstuct anyway.

Dont worry about it.

No one seems to give a shit about double posting. We had one moderator MailMonkey who had a bee in his bonnet about such things but no one else seems to give two hoots.

I did, for about 20 years. Tbh there isnt much difference in outlook between the Welsh and any other population of the UK, apart from quite a bit of small town narrow mindedness and judgementalism that is. :\

Fortunately i was rarely on the receiving end of it and was confident enough to enjoy it, even thrive on it, when i was, as i had a wide circle of friends that accepted me just as i was as a counter balance, this was during my 'teenage rebellion' years. I was part of the fold no matter what i did, right in the heart of the communty, i was very lucky in that regard.
