Yeah, used to be. All the blokes in my family were ... had to move on to diff boating stuff now tho since the fishing industry has basically died.

Dad skippered his own Seiner for about 25 years over here (came over from Denmark in the 60's) ... my bro left school early and went to nautical school and started sailing with my dad from 15 (he wouldnt of lasted at a comprehensive, too much of a wrong 'un). All uncles and male cousins in the same scenario.

My bro has just changed from being 1st Mate on a tug directing boat traffic in the humber, to top bod on a dredger, and is looking to transfer into windfarm stuff and catamaran (sp?) transporting workers to and from the farms to the shore. Got all his licences and Masters along the way with the companies he's been working for.

There's only about 4 boats sailing out of our port now for fishing. Most of it's imported from Africa and stuff now. Few Danish boats still land here (mainy my Dad's mates) but not many. Means free fish tho, so it has it's perks
 
Got huge respect for those people, there is no way you could pay me to do that job due to the danger factor, long hours, hard work, weather etc.
Free Cod aint that bad though.

Aye, 19 hr days in a force 7 gale, and then coming home with no fish to sell, and all the ships expenses to pay regardless can sometimes be a bit of a pisser. 14 days grueling work and you owe £3k lol (But it's good when it's good and my dad was very successful) .... got sick of eating frozen fish for 3 months during winter tho, when they lay up for a few months due to the weather ... its probably why I became a veggie)

My dad was 3/4 blind then too* , so didn't really get the fear of god struck in him like the rest of the crew, when the weather's so bad and the boats listed on a 90degree angle taking in water ... lol, the stories and faces of fear on some of the crew when they came in on landing day were usually a laughable sight

no loos or bathroom facilities on a seiner either back then, so I can't imagine what trying to shit in a bucket while on a 90degree list would be like =D


*got his skippers ticket discretionary automatically when they started to bring in proper testing, cos of his experience, so luckily he wasn't subjected to an eyesight test, which he'd have failed

Premonitions lol.. you know i had that dream about the slave telling me i couldnt have my peeled grape!? Went to the soup kitchen today (boundaries of which had formerly been 'help yerself') and stood in the queue for what looked like mouth watering Kiev and got D fucking nied!!! WTF? lol

(Kind of reminded me of the true event that happened in Thailand. I was sitting in koh phang nang with a couple of israelis lol we all ordered cheese burgers cos fed up with rice et al and 3 menyana hours later got cheese rolls. 'we ordered burgers' said israeli no1 .. 'burger not today its a 'cheese'' eg a burger without the burger. lol)

I cried real tears at the 'hypocricy of the church'.... and this guy ( called skol i think).. came out and went ' its not so badddd'. pahahahahaha

Now my fucking cat just pissed on my sun!! Footy page but still ...Samfuckingsara!

The exact same people are all over this town all the time, I've had several run in's with 'em too. Most of the time it's guys but they have this one woman that is with 'em, must be from Thailand, Laos, Philippines etc & is truly drop dead fit.
All the time before when the guys have stopped me I've given them 2 mins etc but that woman....well I gave her a good 30 mins. I wonder why they brought her over here to walk out 'pon road with 'em ;)

Jesus Wept Marmz, his nearly fully blind & going out in those kind of seas, no wonder your such a tough woman with that kinda DNA in you. It's that kind of stuff that you posted that makes me give them the upmost respect, no amount of money would get me out onto force 7 gale seas.

Arsery. Fukkin pissing down outside now and I need to go out. Not even to do owt exciting. Promised new key worker I'd go look at the listings in the library to see if there's anything I could find to do with meself. Would be nice but I've lived here a long time and if there is owt to do with meself here I suspect it's hidden better than being put up on a board at the library. But heyho. Need to be on best behaviour for DSP so best go along and check all the same. Who knows. Maybe there'll even be a thing!?! 8(

Didn't normally make the decision to head home until force 8+ .... being out in a force 10 is pretty scary all told. Cos we're on the coast you can hear the fog horns all through the night here when it's bad. That was always a time of worry when you were a kid, knowing yer dad and bro are out there with thick fog and bad weather, cos radar is useless in fog.

Eh, the blokes in the family are tough cookies mainly. My dad especially. He was gonna be an engineer, and training in a grammar school in denmark, but got expelled for picking a teacher up and hanging him on a coat peg =D ... so fishing it was.
He had to be air lifted from sea once for a burst ulcer. But that's the only time he's come to any real harm out there. He did lose the top inch of his little finger once, in a whinch accident, blood everywhere and all the crew spazzing out not knowing what to do. They said he just said, 'Baaah, it's only a finger!' and just made em bandage it up, lol. Crew wanted to take the boat into shore, but he was having none of it.

He was a twat as a dad tho and was mainly on the piss for the weeks they were in shore. A provider, not a Dad really. Can undertsand why tho. Strong work ethic and Tory/Thatcher lover, and grassed me up to the Poll Tax collections people when they came to his house looking for me after I'd manage to evade em for ages. We never got along at all and I moved out at 16

No bitterness tho, and I'm his carer now cause he's ill n stuff.

Actually I lied. It was a library. Ah well. I went anyway. Was one What's On that looked good (art classes) but can't get to 'em. Might get a library card though cos had a surprisingly nice selection of books for such a small, rural library.

Dan: I have never seen methylone that looks like that. Looks like drone to me. Or could be any of those "big crystal" stims that seem to be all the rage at the moment, I s'pose. I'd bet a ball (of Spade's, of course) that isn't M1 anyway.

i cant remember if it was last winter or the one before but i was driving to my dads flat over the brecon beacons and it was -12c during broad daylight 2pm or something. Coldest daytime temp i remember, i think it can go well below -15 at night. I seem to have the ultimate stealth chimney, ie no smoke can be seen coming out of it, so the smoke must go fuck knows where filter out through the roof tiles or something. Anyway what this means is that i can supplement my heating with a shedfull of bits of wood ive got left over from DIY prokects. Fucks sake pine goes up like a fuckin rocket. I went forraging for fallen branches too. They are fuckin heavy and kind of embarrasing to walk around with lol. Like everyone else i resent paying these extortiniate prices to the power companies, so im going back to the fucking stone age and gonna fuck them off as much as possible.
