I think some of you are making the job centre to be out much worse than it is. I've signed on a few times over the years and despite them being generally useless at helping you get a job (well you get no help at all but I don't want any anyway so it suits me fine) they aren't really that bad IME. I've never been forced to do anything, had sanctions, money stopped or anything worse than a grumpy adviser tell me I need to widen my job search or be a bit rude to me. Unless maybe you're an absolute chancer or benefit fraudster or something I reckon you don't get much grief if you turn up when you're supposed to, have your signing on book with you and have actually filled it out and make it look like you're doing something even if you're not. It's not hard to fake it, they don't check up on anything so just write some jobs you applied for in your book. Takes all of 2 minutes to go on their website and see what jobs are available and I've never had them either here or in Edinburgh check anything. They just look at it, nod and say "sign here".
Obviously if you're telling them you've been looking for jobs for a month then they ask if you've got an up to date CV you have to say 'yes'.
