Was at the last of my courses through the volunteer centre on Thursday there. What a fucking laugh. We had a band with open mic, balloons, food including homemade pakora from an Indian lady followed by a traditional indian wedding dance, n a very creepy santa handing out sweets (one of the punters dressed up). I would seriously suggest to anyone suffering from anxiety and low self-esteem to try out some volunteer intro courses, refreshing to say the least- did things like personal development, conflict resolution, discrimination etc. Also came away with a lot of helpful documents so I've now got a personal plan and realistic goals set as well as socialising again with folk after so long of self-isolation. Made a friend too which I wasn't expecting. Got some free music lessons lined up through talking to the guys who ran the open mic thing too as they run a club- always wanted to get better at the guitar and been putting it off. This time last year I wanted to hide away but now I'm actually eager to learn things again and think I can start to see that glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Oh yeah.

Smiley91: That sounds good, I've been thinking about doing some volunteering (and already do some but that doesn't start again until march 2016).

Awh I'm glad you had a nice time. You seem like such a lovely person that I'm glad to see you happy n enjoying life. It's kind n thoughtful of you to come here n think of others n how it may help them. That's sweet. Glad you're on Bluelight <3

Do you have a centre for your area that arranges volunteering? Perhaps go there n ask. They may have some ideas n give you help. It also helps the CV too. I volunteer at the magistrates cafe, only making teas n coffees but it feels rewarding, gets me out the house n meeting people which isn't easy for me. How about something like that?

Aw cool, what do you do Ceres? The thing am doing is a "befriending scheme" for the elderly and isolated. I'm interested in working in harm reduction too though (like working at events n stuff) so think I'll do a wee bit of research in to that for a later date.

Aww cheers Evey. I hope life is treating you well. <3

Awh that's adorable. You sound like a total sweetheart. It must be lonely for the elderly n whenever I think of them I remember my Nain n how she was alone towards the end. She would say to me "Thank you, Evey, for coming to see me n going to the shop." At the time I couldn't understand why she was so grateful to me for my visits n me going to shop for her. Near the end she said "Thank you for all the years you've visited me" I had a lump in my throat because I knew what she was saying n we were extremely close.

So know that your gester will make a difference to these people even if it may only seem little it's quite big. You're a kind soul n we need more people like you in this world <3

My little one has been going to choir training n is going to be singing at the local old people's home on Tuesday. We're all so very proud of her for doing this <3

@Zombywoof: Haha thanks I'm glad I could, here have a wee smile back from me --> :) .... I wanted to change it at one point.

@Evey: Aye the volunteering it's very rewarding, enjoyable, am learning a lot so it's win-win for everyone I would say, not that selfless. Thanks for sharing that about ur nan. I think it does mean an awful lot to folk for something so small and easy to achieve as human company. Lovely to hear ye aw proud of your wean, so u should be tht's awesome!

Yeah I tell them about my experiences of depression and acute drug induced psychosis, how my recovery worked and hopefully get the students interested in specialising in psychiatry as a career.

Yeah I've been doing it for 2 years now, it does give them some insight into mental health issues and the feedback from them has been very good. Also helps build my confidence speaking to people.

That's amazing man. How did you get into doing that? I take it you have a medical background yourself as in studied it?

Yeah I have some pharmacology and and psychology qualifications, I'm an undergraduate student myself, working on a degree, evidence based medicine course starts in jan.

Yeah I'd imagine it would help with that as speaking in front of many people can be daunting. But know that you're making a difference even if you may not realise it or ever see it.

How regular do you speak to them? Weekly? Is it an hour or so? Do you only speak or do activities with? Sorry for all questions I'm just interested n sometimes speakers do different activities to check they've taken in the information.

It is once a week over several months, its a kind of mini seminar, there is a Consultant Psychiatrist which supervises the session and usually half a dozen students, theres a Q&A component and sometimes we discuss legal highs and how people can end up having a mental health crisis due to drugs and how that manifests and how it can be treated.

I'm lucky to be able to do this because a lot of people who have been through these mental health crises aren't able to articulate their experience, or haven't recovered, or have even died. So I feel I owe it to the NHS to give back the insights I can and give a voice to those who can't.
