Was at the last of my courses through the volunteer centre on Thursday there. What a fucking laugh. We had a band with open mic, balloons, food including homemade pakora from an Indian lady followed by a traditional indian wedding dance, n a very creepy santa handing out sweets (one of the punters dressed up). I would seriously suggest to anyone suffering from anxiety and low self-esteem to try out some volunteer intro courses, refreshing to say the least- did things like personal development, conflict resolution, discrimination etc. Also came away with a lot of helpful documents so I've now got a personal plan and realistic goals set as well as socialising again with folk after so long of self-isolation. Made a friend too which I wasn't expecting. Got some free music lessons lined up through talking to the guys who ran the open mic thing too as they run a club- always wanted to get better at the guitar and been putting it off. This time last year I wanted to hide away but now I'm actually eager to learn things again and think I can start to see that glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Oh yeah.
Smiley91: That sounds good, I've been thinking about doing some volunteering (and already do some but that doesn't start again until march 2016).
Aw cool, what do you do Ceres? The thing am doing is a "befriending scheme" for the elderly and isolated. I'm interested in working in harm reduction too though (like working at events n stuff) so think I'll do a wee bit of research in to that for a later date.
Aww cheers Evey. I hope life is treating you well.![]()

Yeah I tell them about my experiences of depression and acute drug induced psychosis, how my recovery worked and hopefully get the students interested in specialising in psychiatry as a career.
Yeah I've been doing it for 2 years now, it does give them some insight into mental health issues and the feedback from them has been very good. Also helps build my confidence speaking to people.
Yeah I'd imagine it would help with that as speaking in front of many people can be daunting. But know that you're making a difference even if you may not realise it or ever see it.
How regular do you speak to them? Weekly? Is it an hour or so? Do you only speak or do activities with? Sorry for all questions I'm just interested n sometimes speakers do different activities to check they've taken in the information.
