Getting Wisdom teeth cut out...should I tell Doc about my high tolerance?

Well, this is kind of in the spirit of harm reduction. Harm reduction in the sense that I don't want to be in freggin' pain. Well, as the title states I'm having my wisdom teeth cut out, but would it be a bad idea to tell the doctor about my tolerance to opiates?

I'm afraid that if I do, he might say something like, "Well I'm not going to add to your addiction...just take some naproxen and tuff it out." Should I just keep my trap shut? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

*I hope it doesn't sound like I'm asking what I should say to get drugs. I'm obviously going to get prescribed pain meds, I just don't want the doc to respond to my honesty by thinking, "man this kid is just wanting powerful meds." In some situations I guess honesty can thwart what the doc is trying to do (pain management). If this thread is still against the rules, please delete it mods. (sorry for my newbie ignorance).

So you're worried about after, not during, right? Do you have a doctor that prescribes the meds that you have a high tolerance to? If not I don't think there's any point in telling him, I don't think he would prescribe more/stronger unless your tolerance is legit from pain management.

in my experience, Ibuprophen has actually done more for me to relieve pain after dental work. I'm on 240 MG of oxy a day and it didn't touch the pain I had after a tooth extraction. the 800 MG ibuprophen relieved it very well.
 
When I had my wisdom teeth out I didn't even use the pain meds, just ibuprofen 800 mg every six hours. I saved the pills for later.

You'll probably be able to get through it no matter what your opiate tolerance. Also have some patience not everyone wants to respond to your thread. You waited sixteen minutes before bumping (hello?), sometimes it takes hours or even days to get a response.
 
Sorry for my impatience. "So you're worried about after, not during, right? " I'll be knocked out for the procedure. Yeah, I'm worried about after. I have a tolerance to morphine due to recreational use. It's heartening to know that ibuprofen will effectively help with the pain. Thanks for the help...I'll just keep my mouth shut and not mention anything regarding tolerance.
 
I had all 4 of mine cut out when i was 18 and got demerol. i dunno if there was something wrong with my procedure but i was swollen and in pain for like 3 weeks. Demerol didnt do shit for it but i went back and got percocet and that helped alot more.
 
After I got all 4 removed (compound, even), I didn't even feel em.... till the next morning! I had something like 15 5mg OC given to me... I popped 3, and had never done OCs before, and the next thing I knew, I was eating steak and not giving a fuck... on only 15mg of OC + weed.

After that, I decided to save em for a rainy day (personally, I won't go buying this stuff, just my choice, I know where it would take me). I got by not using any pain meds other than the 800 ibuprofen. I think you will be fine, and mentioning it would probably result in not getting any.

If you have a legit medical reason or history (like surgery and you built a small tolerance to OCs), I would mention that.... Having your teeth out does suck, but only for the first few days... It's more frustrating that you can't eat what you want then the pain.

That's what I'd recommend. You say something, and you risk not getting any.
 
That's going to suck dude. I hope they give you something stronger than ibuprophen!

well if i were you i would mention the fact, because if he gave me naproxen i would just throw them away cuz i FUCKIN hate naproxen, and getting wisdom teeth pulled is painfull, but who am i to judge? lol its just my opinion
ps: morphine is calm and nice :) lol
 
^ i don't get the point of prescribing naproxen anyway. can't you just buy the otc version and take twice as much to get the same result?
 
have to agree with papasomni 100%. i've had major dental work done while on 90mg of methadone/day and also have 4mg dilaudid prn up to 4 times per day. neither did a thing for dental pain but ibuprofen 800mg worked great.
btw, your doc has probably heard the same story a few hundred times. do what you want but imo it probably won't make any difference.
 
You don't need any pain medication for getting your wisdom teeth out. I got all four of mine out and was prescribed 20 vicodin with a refill.. After my wisdom teeth were fully healed i still had 30 some vicodin left. Just take Ibuprofen and save the good meds, it doesn't hurt as bad as you may think.
 
My girlfriend just got hers out and she got perc 7.5/325. She is about 5'6 120 pounds. She only took 2 of them and I got the rest. You should be fine without the pain meds but the ones they give you will be nice in the long run
 
yep ^ thats what i would think. thats so dick tho... if u actually need them than a fucking addict ACTUALLY NEEDS them.
