Okay so I am new on this thread but I've been lurking blue light for years. My dog's recent experiments with kava kava has compelled me to write a thread about it.

Getting the most out of kava-
firstly, you will need some good quality ground kava root. In my dog's opinion, tinctures, pills, and extracts are a waste of time. Just buy the ground root from a good reputable vendor.

Next is preparation. My dog's method is 1 cup of ground kava to 2 cups of whole milk, stirred well and placed in the fridge to steep for an hour. Then the liquid is strained through a kava strainer bag (cheesecloth or even pantyhose will work, as coffee filters do not work well). Make sure to squeeze the bag to get all the juice out. Kneading it will also help release more of the kavalactones.

Drink the beverage in shell dosages (about 4-6 oz at a time and wait 15-20 minutes after each shell to feel effects and judge if more is needed. Effects last several hours so your dog shouldn't worry about slamming it all at once as it could lead to lots of nausea and undesired effects.

This should be done on an empty stomach. Now here's the important part in getting the most out of kava kava. About 30 minutes to an hour after your dog enjoys his/her last shell, feed him a small meal (you don't want to over-feed your dog or it will kill the kava buzz). My dog found that the key is eating something fatty and/or spicy. Spicy foods will speed metabolism and the kavalactones will be metabolized/released faster and the effects will be more pronounced. Fatty foods are also ideal because kavalactones are fat soluble. My dogs personal favorite is a cheeseburger doused in his favorite hot sauce (my dog loves hot sauce on everything).

The kava will hit your dog like a ton of bricks shortly after eating. My dog did this last night and could barely walk after eating he was so krunked! The food definitely added a lot to the effect for him. It was after this experience that my dog realized that kava is an underrated drug and that when one knows how to fully utilize it, it can be very powerful. It is extremely sedating (mostly in higher doses), mildly intoxicating without mental fog, a wonderful anti-anxiety medication (great for after a long, stressful day of chasing squirrels), and has powerful muscle relaxant properties (my dog felt like he was melting into the couch). He has yet to use kava in a social setting but it appears that kava is great for loosening up and increasing sociability.

After experiencing the wonderful and powerful effects of this drug, my dog was compelled to have me write this to inform how great it can really be! It's underrated in my dogs opinion and if other dogs have tried it without effect, they need to either:
1.buy more potent kava root (NOT pills or extracts
2.prepare it differently
3.try the empty stomach, then eating after method. This works wonders!

Also keep in mind that kava has a reverse tolerance. If your dog don't feel much the first time, don't let him get discouraged. Keep trying with the methods above and he will soon have a great experience and wonder why he never bothered with this drug before!

Kava is often called "nature'a Valium". My dog would agree. He prefers kava very much over alcohol, tell your dog to give this wonderful root a chance, he will be glad you did!

My Apologies for the use of "my dog". I'm hoping it will be overlooked for the sake of an informative first post! Thank you!

Thanks Nelo. I remember trying Kava from 1982 onward and getting nothing with pills and powders from a health food store. Then in 2000 (thanks to the internet) I had access to good quality Kava. Much of what you say goes unheeded by most who try to get something out of Kava. Kavalactones/fat/empty stomach/food. That has always been my approach once I got Kava to work. I'll post my recipe too.

Grind up root chunks to powder in a coffee grinder if it is not already powder. I use 5-6 tablespoons of powder. Add in blender. Add a few cups of juice, water, or fruity drink. Add a tablespoon of cream as well as a tablespoon of lecithin. Blend it for a solid 5 minutes. Leave in the refrigerator for an hour or so. Reblend, and drink. Strain or don't. I don't. When I say drink it's the traditional chug a mug in 2 minutes and repeat. The thought of sipping can have me nauseated. So it is a chugalug, usually on an empty stomach. Then a little food is in order.

Thank you for an informative post neloly. I am planning on placing an order for some kava in the next week to be used either in conjunction with kratom, or potentially as a substance to alternate w/ kratom. Your post is very inspiring, and has definitely piqued my interest in this root once again. Take care, and happy krunking ;)

I highly recommend wow! kava(not posting source, just the name of the product) It will literally knock you on your ass! I find it mixes pretty well with kratom! I am currently taking both kava and kratom as I am on probation and I have come to enjoy these plants much more than the other recreationals I used to partake in, simply because it's legal, but both are still very satisfying!! Also much better for your health!!

when i do my little kava nights, i usually make a big batch like ya'll said above, but follow it up with a cup of passion flower tea, then follow up with more kava, its chill , beats alcohol imo,

found an herbalist like 10 minutes away from my house they got jars and jars of all sorts of crazy shit

gotu kola ashwandga

I never had luck with kava... and I got some highly rated kava powder too.

I didn't know about the whole milk (yuck, I hate whole milk but I guess I'll have to tolerate it), empty stomach, fatty small meal thing.

I wonder if its safe to use Kava when you're tapering off of benzos... I honestly never did a whole lot of research into Kava after getting minimal effects from drinking like half a gallon of it.

Nice post..except for the dog thing...if you can please go back and edit it out. It is against the rules here at BL and also makes it difficult to read. It also does nothing to save anyone from incrimination...besides...kava is not illegal!!!

Personally, I find kava a fair anxiolytic but falls short of its alleged 'intoxicant' properties...Of course, the capsules you find at health stores claiming a precise percentage of alkaloids are all, more likely than not, a bunch of BS. I know I'm not alone in this opinion, but has anybody any experience with kava tinctures? Herb Pharm's (not certain this is allowed) kava tincture I have found to be very effective as a sort of 'pseudo-xanax' when supplies are low.

I would continue, but I just wanted to input my $.02...

I used to mess with the extracts and "kaviar kava" but always had the best results with just the powdered ground root.

I just take some and put it in my lip just like you are dipping tobacco. Let that stuff just sit there and dissolve and I find it works way better than if you just ate it.

I'll have to try making a drink out of it as I have never done that before.
