In the world of FAKE REEFER MADNESS, Georgia Governor, Sonny Perdue signed a bill on Monday to outlaw the use and sales of synthetic marijuana, the most common brands, “K2″ or “Spice”. HB 1309 places fake marijuana on a Schedule 1 controlled substances list right along side Heroin and the natural plant it tries to emulate, marijuana. The Bill had bi-partisan support and is targeting the substance that is sold as an herb coated with a synthetic chemical that can get a user high when smoked. It is marketed as an incense and can also be purchased on line in the same quantities as marijuana with an eighth costing about $45 dollars. Each package comes with a warning sticker, “Not for Human Consumption”.

The compound was created by an organic chemist, John W. Huffman in the mid-1990’s to mimic the effects of cannabis on the brain to study cannabinoid receptors. The actual substance that is being banned, JWH-018 bears his initials. Huffman has since come out to plead with people that the substance may be toxic and should defiantly not be used for recreational purposes. Georga joins a handful of other states that have recently banned the substance, and about six more are considering a ban. The Military has banned use for soldiers and the drug has been banned in Europe for a few years. It is produced in Korea and China and distributed worldwide.

A USA Today article cited several cities and the states of Kansas, Alabama and Kentucky that have already outlawed the drug. Missouri and Tennessee have passed bans that will take effect unless vetoed by their governors and Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, New Jersey and New York are considering bills to outlaw the drug.

From Wikipedia:
As of March 21, 2010 Georgia has a bill (House Bill 1309) proposing the ban of JWH-018 and other substances. The bill has passed the house and is waiting to be signed.[20]

Will be illegal Starting July 1, 2010

There might be a few reasons for banning "fake marijuana". But, banning the real thing is a sin. How does one ban a plant? Isn't that a little arrogant, saying that God made a mistake.

^ Exactly. Hundreds of people die each year from alcohol poisoning. None have ever died from weed (or even JWH).

^What makes plant drugs more reasonable for legalization then synthetics? I understand that they're natural and that banning nature is stupid, but I don't see why they should be treated differently from synthetics in terms of legality. Many synthetics a much safer then plant drugs (and vice versa of course).

There's talk in Texas of banning a list of synthetics including JWH-XXX compounds, CP 55940, HUT-210, and more. Bastards.

All drugs should be decriminalized, regardless of anything. The government has no damn business telling people what they can and cannot put in their bodies. Drug legalization (or at least decriminalization) would make drug use a lot less dangerous, treatment more available, and would keep millions of people from being locked in cages simply for their choice of recreation.

aw fuck tell me it ain't so -" let all drugs be legal" ! that is a sophomoric, idyllic notion .
spend some time in a jail or prison and listen to the "i'm innocent " home invaders .
crack, smack, meth becomes front and center reason for living for a large number already emotionally bent and mostly salvageable of societies bottom feeders .

i an not a sociologist nor a bright fellow but see this as a condition of humanity .
drug laws have bitten me on the ass but narcotics for anyone - you gotta be shitting me !

It's actually about our natural inalienable rights. The government has no business telling people what they can and cannot consume, even if the substance is harmful. But this debate has been done to death.

Anyone can get narcotics already. Prohibition doesn't stop people scoring. It creates victimless crimes and overcrowds our prisons.

Why not? Basically all drugs were legal 100 years ago. Drug prohbition is the big problem, not drugs.

If we're talking literally, remember that the God of the Torah intentionally harms people. His weapon is often non-human and drawn from nature (as in the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden, the great flood, many of the Mosaic plagues (excluding the one that involves an angel with a sword) and the ever-famous Elisha summoning two bears to maul to death some children that were pestering him.

I wonder though, if we take the average human with the average internal plumbing and place him alone on a planet with an indefinite amount of arable soil and reagents and quality glassware, would he settle for a plant that he can consume raw or would he instead focus on developing more potent synthetics and semi-synthetics...

I guess the emotional appeal of legalization varies inversely with the level of technology needed to develop the subject of legislation. Hence cannabis is as close to zero-tech as you can get.
