All addictions are the same. They are caused by a hijacking of reward related learning. Though, I am being somewhat tautalogical, because I define an addiction as that.
But still, in gamblers, the 'reward' (in a physiological sence) is so strong, from winning, that it causes neuronal rewiring, and leads to a pathological state in which there is an obsession with gambling. Its the same with drugs, except the reward is pharmacologically induced, and you also get withdrawal symptomes which make it even harder to ignore the urge.
