All politics is self-serving - cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias helps us only see things which justify our position (whether poor or rich) - even so, by majority, the poor people's self-serving should have prominence (rather than the rich's as is currently, unnaturally the case). SHM: Agreed about the trappings of power - lottery (or jury service) based revolving part-time representatives who serve a maximum of a year, have to live on the lowest amount that they legislate for (the dole) and have all outside wealth frozen might help

Ohh it goes a lot further back and a lot deeper than that believe me.

Language matters. Do you know the phrase the trappings of power?

It's an interesting one. I used to be good friends with a journalist I've sadly lost touch with. He was a good left-wing bloke, working class as they come etc etc. He told me a story about being invited to meet and interview a particularly right wing Tory bigot (I actually can't remember who but it doesn't matter). He was rubbing his hands at the chance of putting this bigot on the ropes. My mate was a good journalist and knew his stuff.

The interview was in the Tory MPs private office in the House of Commons. My mate was met, greeted, wined and dined in fine surroundings. The ornate surrounds had an effect he was appalled at. He went in there with all the left wing will in the world and came out with a tame interview and disgusted at himself for actually thinking he liked this bigoted bloke a bit.

That's the (literal) trappings of power. Set and setting in political terms. I hope you understand what I mean, however idealistic any of you think you are. Environment matters. Language matters. The trappings of power.

Burn it down.

Great post. :)

We've met our prospective new MP on several occasions now, and he's probably going to oust our Labour incumbent. He's a lovely guy, a bit shy, down to earth, working class, lives locally in a modest house, and has been a successful and popular SNP councillor for many years. He's a "normal person".

When I shook his hand on Saturday and wished him luck, I looked into his eyes and just thought: For fucks sake - please don't let Westminster change you.

The recent BBC 4-part documentary on Parliament and the House of Commons was an eye-opener. I can see how being immersed in all that self-important and luxurious nonsense, with all the traditions and privileges it entails, could turn someone's head if they're not careful.

The woman to his left is the one who was going to head the paedo enquiry until it was found she hung around with one of the (alleged) paedos - and she's mayor of the city of london corporation (the bankers' city-state). Maybe trappings of power can have an even more literal meaning (in the child-catcher sense)

christ is it any wonder our election system doesn't work to produce genuine change when there is that kind of level of apathy, ignorance and political illiteracy, particularly galling coming from people in constituencies where a handful of votes could have such a huge impact. Never mind citizenship exams for immigrants, they should be giving them to people who already live here!

By Friday we’ll be reduced to bystanders at a revoltingly macho political stare-off

without proportional representation it is quite simply a lie to tell everyone that their vote matters – one that suits the big parties. It doesn’t. It matters depending on where you live, and this election will be decided on 20 to 30 seats. We are starting to see a loss of faith by the voters and a loss of face by the political class now.

Underpinning this sense of huge uncertainty, this sense of things falling apart, is of course Scotland, where a democratic result is continually framed as a coup, and in the way that people in godforsaken parts of England now talk of the Scots as if they were Romanians.

If only we could actually hang Parliament!

Har har. Very good. Looks like a real party to be around too, doesn't she?

Actually, I've noticed alot of this. What makes those with power & money so fucking sour? Having everything just ain't enough for the miserable lot of inbred scum, is it? I wonder is abusing kids gets a grin out of the old slag?
