General Drug Tolerance Question [:

Is it possible to get to a point in a drug-primarily a medication-tolerance in which, taking that same dose of that drug can do less good than beforehand when you were not on that drug at all?
for example, say your taking 1mg of klonopin and you have been taking it for 4 years. You know it is not doing much of anything for your anxiety anymore, but do you think it is possible that you have such a tolerance for it, that your anxiety is now worse than it was 4+ years ago when you weren't on klonopin and had NO tolerance for it??

dear moderator, can you change the name from Geeral Tolerance Question to General* Tolerance Question...lol.?

I doubt one's anxiety would be worse. I mean you're still taking klonopin so it must keep your anxiety lower than it was before you took it

Yes, it absolutely is possible. For example, opioids can cause hyperalgesia (heightened sensitivity to pain) and allodynia (pain from things that should not cause pain or pain with no "physical" or external source), making the person's pain worse than it would be without opioids. Long-term use of benzos can worsen anxiety. There are studies and medical sources on this. I can post some links for you if you're interested.

^yeah she pretty much summed it up. It is very possible and in fact very common. Benzo's also cause rebound anxiety so your anxiety after a dose wears off will be worse than prior to dosing. I have a lot of experience with the opiate example given above and a month or two clean really reset my system and reduced my pain so significantly. I was at the point where a bump on the shin felt worse than a broken bone I'd had years before. A tolerance break could be a very good thing if you decide you need to continue on this medicine anouldnt be better off without it.

From personal experience I have to say absolutely! I had bad panic attacks and they went to terror attacks. Was taken off benzos bc the dr felt they weren't helpin and I did ok for a few months. Now they're back times 10! So back on them and so far so good. I ended up makin several trips to the ER before bein put back on benzos. Along with hydroxyzine 50-100 mgs with each benzo dose.
Like someone said, you can get rebound anxiety which most of the time comes back +1.

thx everybody for there responses/opinions(:

The example that I used wasn't the exact one I asked for, I asked because I am currently taking 1125mg of phenibut a day. I really don't want to go up one the dose, but I did find it was helping my social anxiety when I had first started it, so I started thinking -and I actually kinda always wondered this with drug tolerace in general- if I stay at this exact dose and don't go down or up, what if my anxiety isn't better one bit or even gets worse than before I was on it at all.

Well, much less is known about phenibut than benzos, but I think it's possible phenibut to worsen anxiety as well. Are you considering lowering your dose or tapering off it and seeing how you feel?
