I for one have played chess obsessively for years. Not the last year though...just got totally sick of it, having played it online on chess-club.com for 5 years straight (sometimes all day every day)

I haven't been there in a while, but I used to enjoy GameKnot. I played mostly a turn-by-turn version, where an email was sent whenever it was my turn, but they have real time chess as well. The version I played suited me best, because it allowed us to play at whatever pace real life allowed.

SA, no offence but that sounds horrible. I don't see how taking days or even months to finish a single game you could finish in an hour's time could be fun in the least.
Seriously, how are you able to keep the same strategy going over all that time?

Never had any difficulty, really. During a cross country journey, if you stop over for the night, do you suddenly forget your planned route when you wake up the next morning? Chess is more fluid than that anyway. I've never had a game which lasted months, but those that lasted a couple of weeks, I generally found just as enjoyable as real-life one-hour games. Besides, my skill level won't let a game last that long anyway. LOL

^I'm sure there are some people who've played a single game for that long, but you're right it probably isn't that common.
But I'd hardly compare a cross country journey to playing chess. A chess game is ALL strategy, and everything can completely change with a single move. A cross country journey dosen't change. Sure, they way you go about that journey may change, but the roads you take will never change from day to day.

^I believe you I'm sure you wouldn't be playing a game you didn't enjoy. I was just saying it seems a little harder to keep a strategy going is all. Just like pretty much every other game, I enjoy playing in person more. Unfortunately, good chess opponents are hard to come by...for me anyway .

How Many Females Know How to Play Chess?

Chess has always been sort of a fascination of mine, and, in particular, girls who play chess. I think mostly because time and time again when I ask other females if they know how to play chess they say no. While almost every male I ask says they know how to play (even if they haven't played in years and years). Is this just my experience?

I was just taught how to play by my boyfriend (today) and obviously it's a lot of fun... even for me, an awful player.

I actually see this type of gendered game trends elsewhere. For example I know a lot more women who play Sudoku than men. While crosswords seem to remain intersexed. Has anyone else noticed these trends? Do you think societal factors implement these norms or is there something more/different than what I suspect?

I'd appreciate it if the staff from this forum shifted this thread onto SO after it seems to have its 'due' in here as I'd like to open this discussion to the most people possible. No offense my fellow gamer friends!

I think girls just dont like games as much in general, and since chess requires so much time and effort to be any kind of good at they just dont bother.
