No, I am not a grandma or middle aged man, or homosexual even. But I do enjoy having a small garden. This year I opted for all pots/containers instead of dirt for several reasons. A lot of the veggies I want to grow are easier from what ive read, to grow in containers (as well as being able to control the size of the plant)..... so far this year ive started:

Hybrid Tomatoes
Cayenne Peppers
Red Bell Peppers
Cucumbers

I plan on quickly transplanting some cowhorn peppers ive never eaten (that I know of) or grown... you know the plants started in cups at lowes and shit.... Since peppers take so long to mature, I wonder if I planted a little late this year... hmmmm oh well..... I'll add the first pictures I got tomorrow.....

Im a little worried about the deer since they ate about 30-40% of all my crops last year. Bastards.....


What are my fellow bl'ers growing, got any pics..... for once a thread about growing, and its not related to drugs. :D

yo, I personally love gardening and install them for other people professionally. This year I have planted broccoli, beans, cabbage, beats, radish, chard, lettuce, tomatoes, egg plant, squash, cucumber, melons, okra, corn, peppers, strawberries, and a bunch of herbs. Good stuff :D I'll post some pics for sure.

chemicalsmile: who told you that growing in containers is easier? Lies I tell you!!! Also, I would paint the outside of those white pots yellow or something. The sunlight will kill the roots. A layer of mulch such as herbicide-free grass clippings, alfalfa, or something along those lines will leach nitrogen down and prevent evaporation.

If anyone has gardening questions I'd love to try and answer them :)

I heard that growing certain peppers such as cayenne and habenero are much easier to grow if you have the right nutrients and control the temperature of the pot. I will plan on painting the pot yellow but I just transplanted the cayenne pepper into a bigger green container and I really dont want to paint it. The cost, and the planter looks fine as it is, but if completely necessary. I guess so... last year I grew jalapenos and had no problem with the buckets. I put a strip of cardboard undernmeath them so the heat of the brick/cement whatever doesnt heat them up and I water every two days usually and I get great results. The cayenne has shot up a lot, its got a fet dark spots on the top leaves I believe which are burns, but now they are in partial shade with cardboard underneath them to help regulate temp. I think I see the first formations of peppers. Woo wee. I heard cayenne is a heavy fruiter.

I want to start a cherry tomato and a cowhorn pepper (never heard of it or seen it) but im thinking it might be too late even if I get the baby plants and transplant them.... well im sure I could ger some fruits but not many since it takes a good while for a pepper plant to mature.... I live on the coast in north carolina. I wonder how late peppers and tomatoes and other veggies fruit here...... maybe the end of october? And I heard cherrys do well indoors and im thinking about keeping it indoors since there are a lot of deers around here and they have snatched up some of my stuff before..... its quite frustrating..... and you cant hunt them and even if you could ... im not really a hunter.
 
Im am growing some eggplant, and I have alot of fruit trees growing (peach, plum, tangerine, apricots).

As weird as it may sound, I want to buy a goat, for milk...
 
Our garden is so pathetic. We have a basil plan, catnip that our cat won't eat, and some succulents. I cannot wait to have a huge yard where I can grow all my beautiful flowers.

Oooh I've been wanting to start a thread on gardening for ages!! Good on ya ChemicalSmile :)

We moved into our new home about 10 months ago, and one of the selling points was that it not only had a big backyard, but also had a vegie patch!! So we promptly unleashed our green thumbs and got to planting!

Herbs:
Basil
Mint
Thyme
Oregano
(and Strawberries a Watermelon plant too, in the same plot. The Strawberries didn't last long as they were planted at the wrong time of the year I'm assuming?)

Capsicum (which didn't last...possibly due to being too close to the Cucumber?)
Lettuce (which were all promptly eaten by snails grrr!)

These photos were all taken about 8-9 months ago so obviously all the plants are much more matured than in the pics. Most of the vegies have been replanted/replaced, and all the natives and the passionfruit are MUCH bigger :)
Plus I've put an awesome mulch over everything too.

Something I really want to start this year is growing some type of plant. Pretty much I just want to grow some cucumbers, or tomatoes or cherry tomatoes, because those are all of my favorite veggies. Just wondering though, are any of those hard? I have no experience in gardening at all, but I can learn fast most likely.
 
the hardest would probably be cucumbers, but they really don't require much attention. i usually grow mine up on a teepee of stakes or a lattice. that's about all, really.

tomatoes are incredibly easy to grow.

Yep, tomatoes and cucumbers are a great start!
As eras3r said, tomatoes are very easy. Just plant them up against some stakes or lattice and watch them happily grow. I'd probably try some cherry tomatoes to start with.
We had great success with our cucumber. I didn't really know what to do with it at the time so it just grew along the ground (covered probably 1.5 metres of ground in the end?) and we got about 15 big juicy cucumbers out of it! They were perfect :)
When the plant died we had to go back to shitty store-bought cucumbers eww :p

Ooh also, we planted them with a tiny bit of blood and bone powder about 10cm beneath the bottom of the hole we actually dug for the seedlings, if that makes sense? So that it's not actually in direct contact with the seedling roots (it can burn them or something?)
Then about 4 months later we sprinkled a tiny amount of blood and bone about 15cm around the base of the plants.
They love it!!
 
I have a few flowering plants growing... I've always been such a lazy gardener. I start stuff like wheatgrass and never cut it and it eventually dies. It pretty much needs to be inside or somewhere I pass through often or I can't keep it alive.
 
i just started a garden in my back yard about a week ago. seedlings are popping off like crazy, i'll get some pictures up soon
 
I got black spots on the stalk where the stems meet. I heard they may be a pepper canker..... how do they affect the plant and can I treat i? It has shown its ugly head on my sweet bell pepper as well as cayenne!
 
you should look it up online, its actually surprisingly easy. seriously, i didn't think it would be until i looked up a specific insect infestation and quickly found the bug's name and how to kill it.
 
this is my, uh... patch of dirt/compost. aka future garden spot. it took about 6-7 hours totall to prepat\re, so i'm proud of it regardless. i got a pre-started strawberry plant so i could put SOMETHING in it. in the back i've already put some corn, cucumber, and sunflowers in the soil. anyways don't laugh...

just a bunch of tomatoes(two kinds), romaine lettuce, and watermelon. i'm gonna have more, my buddy has a shitload of other good seeds but ihaven't been able to raid his stash yet.
 
looks good jam uh, i would take the starts out of the cups, despite the label's instructions :)
