I never said that? The TV series is an adaption. It isn't a exact copy of the book, so it can't be treated as such.

Also it would be weird for them to have the same type of calander since the basis of behind the creation of their calander would be different from ours. Its clearly a different world than ours like you said, so the creation of their calender will not be the same as ours, so why would there be 365 days in a year, why would they have ~30-31 days in a month, etc.

i think it's a fair assumption that if something isn't explicitly addressed in the tv show, that they their lead from the book. you didn't ask about the man-made aspects of things like calendars - i don't recall anybody arguing that that their year is 365 days so i'm not sure where you get that from?

their month seems to be a unit of measurement roughly on a par with our month. likewise a day. that suggests they live on a planet similar to ours in respect of both its rotation period and its lunar cycle.

I don't completely understand your post.

I'm using the fact that their calender is different to show that their years may not be 365 days like ours. So the ages could be matched up to the way the characters are portrayed in the series, with 14 being say 18, meaning their year is longer than 365.

I think it is a silly assume their world has the same rotational peroid, and definitaly lunar cycle (there used to be multiple moons, so what are the odds that it will be similar to ours?). The seaons are also so different that there clearly are different actions involved with their planet. Even if they use the same physics, the movements involved with the planet may be different, clearly differentaiting itself from earth.

Also, I haven't read all the way through the books, just like many individuals here, so the information being used in this thread at least for a lot of users isn't being pulled from the books when it is left unexplained. We are using the information we gain from the TV series solely, and not trying to tie in the books. I think its unfair to do so, especially when trying to discuss the TV series (unless your trying to compare the two).

I think we need to talk about either the TV series or the books, not both because they aren't not 100% the same.

i'd say it's near impossible to discuss the tv show without discussing the books to some extent.

i've explained the reasoning behind my assumptions - i disagree with you that they're silly.

^They had to age some of the characters up so they could show the sex scenes I think.

On this argument about whether their world is the same as ours or whatever.

"For some reason, my suspension of disbelief had no problem with the fact that this ancient galaxy is filled with humans, but was derailed by language. There's no Asia or Europe there, so where did they get all the Indo-European roots?" http://xkcd.com/890/

If you want to really have that conversation lets talk about Etymology. ;)

Another thought: They have winters and summers that last years, sometimes decades. How does that factor into a world that supposedly has the same (as Earth) day, month & year length as well as lunar cycle? Just a thought.

I'm about 4/5 of the way through the first book, so I'm sure there is much more to be revealed to me.

Note: I am well aware that this is a work of fiction.

In the TV show I've always wondered about "where" they are. Is it a planet or something else?
Bran mentions that the world is an "eye of a giant." Which prob just some sort of metaphor for the author's eye.

To answer your question, the planet's orbit could be such that it is closer to a sun object for a shorter period of time and winter is a longer distance much like that of a comet. Even a year is an incorrect amount of time due to the leap year.

I've always liked the idea that its actually a really large spaceship, a dyson sphere, sort of like the opening credits. Call me crazy! :D

Also, last two episodes! Syked!

"sky is blue because we live in the eye of a blue eyed giant name Macumba"

awesome

Actually, the planet is slightly larger than Earth. And the long winters are a magical phenomenon, which fucks with the maesters who hate anything being unscientific. Straight from Martin's mouth.

This series has turned me into a nerd.

I thought this too, that their world simply had a very eccentric orbit - but Kepler's laws sort of throw a wrench into this theory.

Funny enough, magic winters make more sense.

Well, for the previous episode (which I only watched tonight), Catylin is an idiot. With Jamie as a hostage, her daughters are safe. Now that Jamie is freed, they have no hold over the Lannisters.

As for tonight's episode, once again, Tyrion is screwed over from the books.

WHY NO CHAIN? SERIOUSLY?
