Gabapentin Never Made Me Sleepy Before!

I've been on it for about 8 years. I've never really abused it. I'm prescribed 600 mg per day and my average is about 350 mg per day (I actually track this).

But in the last 6 months or so it's hard to take it during the day without knocking me out. This NEVER happened before. In fact, for years it would give me a stimulant-ish lift.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening to other people?

I will say that I have heard multiple anecdotal reports of Gabapentin's effects suddenly changing for people following chronic usage. I've heard some people report it started making them feel ill, some people it started making them feel crazy and emotional and of course others just say it stopped working. I mention this because it seems to be an actual issue with chronic Gabapentin usage for many people.

I can't speak to the real specifics of your situation, but I can tell you I've heard similar experiences. For the record, a lot of people report Gabapentin as stimulating, myself included. I wouldn't ever call it a depressant in the classic use of that term. I think when it's combined with other substances, especially depressants like Opiates and Alchohol, the Gabapentin seems to increase the severity of a person's intoxication/stupor.

Thanks!

I can't say it's making feel ill or crazy or emotional. But it does seem like the stimulant nature of it is gone and that it's triggering naps during the day.

You used the word "suddenly" and it certainly feels that way in my case. It's not been a gradual thing. I looked back through my journal and can say it was not doing this late last year. But around January it seemed to start happening. I didn't have any other drug/medication or lifestyle changes at that time so I'm a bit stumped.

I don't take it during the day a lot but I have enough for a big enough sample size, I think. A few days ago I zonked out and woke up with slobber on myself during a time when my Adderall should have been peaking. THAT never happens either.

Yes it's pretty random with the effects, for me it will start with a bit off anxiety, then about 6-8 hours later I feel great, not exactly high, just.....at peace, I don't how to describe it, when it works good it's one of the best substances imo, extremely powerful yet subtle effects, you'll find that anything you do is more entertaining, it causes a feeling of contentment, almost like a dxm afterglow. This is after 1 800. I know people who took literal handfuls of them and got completely wacked out. If you stagger the dose, it tends to hit harder. I've taken it everyday, i've taken handfuls, i'd recommend using it sparingly as it will cause you withdrawals and it's really easy to get so thats a problem. Limit it to weekly or even better biweekly, and when you do take it, it works great. I find that when you take it everyday it doesn't really do much.
