Gabapentin - It's shit. Official.

Treacle, I have been on Pregabalin ages and have gained about 3-4 stone in a year. Its like constant weed munchies :(

edit: mdb - Pregabalin is a far more efficient version of Gabapentin yes, less side effects for same medical effect
 
It doesn't seem to matter how much you eat, either. Pregabalin works by converting glutamate (a major excitatory neurotransmitter, and one that is responsible for keeping us awake and ticking) into GABA, which obviously slows us down. So, it has a double-whammy effect of slowing down the brain, and metabolism. Even a sensible diet doesn't seem to help. Stopping the drug seems to quickly reverse the weight-gain, so maybe start skipping days. That worked for me. What do you do, when you're faced with mental/physical pain relief, with weight-gain, or staying miserable? It's a tough call.
 
That's interesting, so even if I go on a diet I'm still screwed hah.

I've tried coming off it for this very reason. I skipped a few days, as in took it every other day, and was quickly in pain-insanity land again so had to get back on it. In my case I have no choice, pain is unbearable without.

Pretty much. Be skinny and in pain, or be chunky and happy... :)

Lyrica is one of four drugs which a subsidiary of Pfizer in 2009 pleaded guilty to misbranding "with the intent to defraud or mislead". Pfizer agreed to pay $2.3 billion (£1.4 billion) in settlement, and entered a corporate integrity agreement.

Yeah, Pfizer really fucked up when it came to branding Lyrica (& Neurontin).

I'm just really greatful that these drugs exist & are available on the market cos pregabalin works wonders for neurological/nerve pain where opiate based pain medications are for the most part ineffective.
 
^That's true, I used to take 100mg Tramadol 4x a day before they figured out the pain was neurological, it did NOTHING.
 
I like pregabalin. I've never tried gabapentin but I imagine it to be similar. Obviously for some conditions pregabalin remains effective if taken every day but I find a lot of the effects diminish with regular use and there is also dependency and withdrawal to think about. Although with tapering pregabalin WD was much easier than say opiate or benzo WD.

I think it's well known that Pfizer are notorious for misleading people like this.
 
I'm taking Lyrica daily for over a year now and it's still good for me. But seeing Pfizer's track record, I often wonder if I'm not really taking something that will cause me chronic issues through unpublished side effects. Definitely worrisome.

As it stands, Lyrica seems much more benign for daily 'anxiolytic' use than either benzos, GHB, or SSRI--for me. I've tapered down to my minimum effective dosage (2x or 3x 50mg per day, sometimes 75mg) and the weight retention and the munchies are minimal/non-existent at this point. It makes me act like a smiley idiot at higher dosages (as if it disables a good chunk off my brain whenever I take a "recreational dose") but not as bad as an equivalent dose of benzos would.
 
I have just been upped today from 300mgs of Gabapentin per day to 600mg, then I will be upped to 900mg and that's it according to the GP, whether I'm in pain or not I'm off the sicklines and back to work, fucking bullshit, Gabapentin does relax muscles but it doesn't relieve all pain, little does my GP know that the only reason I can get the Gaba to work is if I take Clonazepam or Diazepam with it !
 
Gabapentin works a treat for me. I've got chronic pain, both regular, opioid-responsive pain and after a failed knee op to relieve said pain, it just left me with neuropathic pain and loss of sensation in part of my leg. The gabapentin works really well for the neuralgia, whereas IV oxy doesn't really touch it until I've booted up 4-5 OC80s.
