Friends with your Ex?

What do you think about staying friends with your ex if...

1. You're both still single?
2. You're in a new relationship?
3. One of you is clearly not over the relationship?
4. How would you handle it if your so was still friends with their ex?
4b. And if their ex wanted them back?

4b. not the best situation but my boyfriend is his own person so I'm not going to say he couldn't

Edit:
I would be fine being friends with my ex. He's a pretty cool guy but we just were NOT compatible. We have very different values, morals, ethics, interests, etc. We are NOT friends because I moved away (he still lives in our hometown) and there is just no normal reason why I would see him. My parents are in that hometown so, on the times that I visit them (twice a year?), I technically could run into him and it'd be fine.
Also, my boyfriend would have no problem with me being friends with him. Even if my ex wanted me back, I doubt my boyfriend would care, but I personally wouldn't feel comfortable with it.

Ill just answer in general: I can't remain friends with an ex.

I've tried it multiple times in the past, under all the above circumstances and it doesn't work for me. Either im not over them, their not over me.. it ended badly, or there's some unresolved awkwardness, it's easier for me to cut out the past from my life rather than continue to relive it.

Im notorious for cutting people out of my life when i feel as though i've outgrown them or they've outgrown me.

If my girlfriend and her Ex still love each other.. I would leave her to come back to him. Is that what you meant?
Because no i wouldn't be comfortable with my ex loving another one

That does make more sense now. That you'd break up with your girlfriend so she could be with the ex who she loves.

exactly.
in my original post, i meant that if two people broke up, yet they remained friends with each other afterwards, in my opinion, it means that they were never in love or they still are..
