The CRS (Republican Security Companies), which made its name quelling student demonstrators during nationwide disturbances in 1968, has always enjoyed a glass of beer or wine with its meals.

However, following photos of riot police drinking bottles of beer during Paris street protest, police chiefs have decided to put an end to the tradition.

They were wearing body armour and carrying weapons as they sipped from beer and wine bottles. Some were also smoking.

Didier Mangione, national secretary of the police union, said bosses were "trying to turn us into priests, but without the altar wine".

"Nobody should object to a small drink on jobs," he said. "CRS officers do not have any more or less alcohol problems than anybody else in society. They should be allowed to drink in moderation."

Lol these guys :D

pfft, the French....

As biased as I am against them I still don't think that having a drink with your meal is a big deal, although on the flip side of the coin that one drink could potentially mean the difference between life and death if your reaction time is slowed, doubtful that would ever happen but I can see both sides of the argument.

Lol, wow, I don't understand how they could ever think this is acceptable. Drinking on the job, not as LEO.

My brother-in-law lived in Paris for 4 years, and after meeting several of his French friends I have learned 2 things:

1. The French are insufferable
2. They will complain about anything, at anytime, anywhere, ever.

French people are like everyone else: there are some stupid ones and some brilliant ones. Don't make generalities, please.

As for drinking alcohol while on duty for a CRS, I think it's not acceptable. But let them do their strike, that will be funny.

Hmm if they're handling weapons than they should have to remain sober on duty, I believe in the US most states that allow CCW outlaw carrying while intoxicated, may be the same for armed hunters.

You forget theis is france, these guys need at least 3 litres of wine to be remotely intoxicated. :P

This made me lol.

But if your handling weapons...you shouldn't be drinking, it's a universal FACT.

It is ridiculous that this is an issue at all.
Who would think it is okay to drink while on the job as a police officer, handling weapons, etc.?

[In 100 years]
"Okay everyone, one half-tab of LSD is okay for on-the-job police officers, but please do not take a full tab until after work."

I'm not worried about the cops ending up hurt because their reaction time is slowed and they catch a flying bottle to the face mask, I'm more concerned that the drink or two will loosen their inhibitions that little bit extra it takes to beat a civilian to death or shoot them without thinking.

I just don't see the reason for them to be drunk, they're supposed to be the protectors...drink yourself under the table after work but please don't be buzzed when you do such a serious job.
